Audio Editor in place of a DAW?

If tracking audio exclusively, is it possible to use an editor in place of a DAW, e.g., RX, Melodyne, etc.? In my never ending search for a streamlined set-up I woke up wondering . . .

Do you happen to know which editors can do this? It seems only Melodyne Studio can multitrack.

I'm not interested in FX or anything other than tracking and editing. All the DAWs can do this, of course, but they come with bloat . . . tons of features I will not use.

Absolutely. About half of all current DAWs started as a midi sequencer, others as an audio editor with multi-track capabilities. Later they all converged to do similar things.
25 years ago my recording setup was two SoundBlaster cards (to record 4 mono tracks simultaneously) and the software was CoolEdit Pro (later became Adobe Audition with added bloat)

Then don't look at Melodyne.
Or is pitch correction a nescessity in editing?

Pretty much wavelab or soundforge I would think. Though they do have effects. Probably some free or 3rd party alternatives, but they are not likely to be as good. You can do much with these editors, Melodyne I guess would be the one with the most specialized direction and no plugins and whatnot.
I would just use HW personally, if I didn't want to use a DAW...
