Yep, MOTU should be a bit louder about that, they updated everything a year or two ago to work with Falcon and UVI workstation.

It's still an air born thing with Falcon, but I thought MachFive was a great name for a sampler workstation.

If I've downloaded Falcon Factory rev2 is there any reason for me to download the older Falcon Factory?
Not when you are new to Falcon.
You need this for old projects to load that contain presets from the old factory presets.

Got it. Thanks

That's just a Venn diagram. Any similarity to stereo mode icon is purely coincidental. :D

Are there really no key commands in Falcon? I hope I'm just not seeing it anywhere. Hard to believe a tabbed interface doesn't have keyboard shortcuts to jump to a new tab.

I was kind of surprised I didn't find much discussion of Falcon's soundware here, since it's one of the first decisions you make after buying it and getting the $50 coupon. Am I missing a topic somewhere? Search didn't easily turn one up.

I've found them generally unimpressive (I have 4). They are too "sound designed" in my opinion. Very idiosyncratic and would instantly be recognizable. Of course, you can edit them in Falcon but many of them are quite complex and its difficult to know exactly what is doing what. The best Falcon Expansion is the free one by Venus Theory. It has distinctive but usable sounds (i.e. not immediately recognizable) and good selection of front panel editing parameters so you don't have to go digging for what is modulating what. If its an arpeggio or sequenced sound, it has an actual sequencer on/off toggle which (to my surprise) none of the other Expansions offer.

I think the Factory soundset is generally very good so the Expansions have been a surprising disappointment.

I listened to a bunch and ended up buying (with the coupon plus the current BOGO offer):

Cinematic Shades
Noctua (Cameron's free one and likely the best as you say!)
Voklm
Pulsar
Plurality
both Subcultures

as those were the only expansions that did anything for me.

Much of the other Soundware are really expensive overall. I kind of want a good orchestra one, and GuitarSyn is interesting, but I am completely disinterested in all the synth ones - I dislike UVI's approach for them. I have owned some before and for vintage synths I want emulations, not sample libraries.

Agree 100%. There are so many cool, unique Kontakt libraries out there for similar prices. The downside is you have to use Kontakt (I purged all NI stuff. I'm done with them). If I want a synth, I'll use a synth. I don't know who is buying vintage synth romplers in 2024. I hope they start doing more interesting stuff like Glass Orchestra which is something I'm interested in but not at $200 or Augmented Orchestra at $300!

ok, I just played around with the Venus Theory expansion and I guess I'd like to add that it, too, is plenty "sound designed" but I think the taste level is more modern than, say, the Simon Stockhausen expansion Ether Fields which has tons of what I'd consider "cheesy" sounds. Especially the arps or sequenced sounds. Every sound has a bunch of modulation and if you go in an turn off all the seqs and lfos the base sound is usually very vanilla. "So why disable the mod sources?" you ask? Because those seqs and arps and lfos are the thing that make the sound, um, sound so busy and easily identifiable. Long winded way of saying I hope Venus Theory does more Expansions because my taste is closer to his and I find much of the other Expansions I bought to be fairly "cheesy".

Hmm, I didn't like the Venus Theory expansion at all. For my taste too overprocessed and oversaturated, not very musical. I liked the Organic and the Modular series, Cinematic Shades and Kinetics.

Not too sure many listeners are going to be able to pick out a specific Falcon preset but I think they suffer from the same issue that Current did, which is that most of the presets are just way too much and cover basically the entire sonic spectrum and would be extremely difficult to use in a full track. And dissecting them is something of a headfuck.

That said, why use Falcon if you're not going to make something totally wild and deep?

I decided to not worry about this and just bought four for $28 after coupon. Coupon + sale = great deal by doing that.
