Yes. The Ambiente plugin can work with just audio tracks. It will integrate SWAM instruments through the built-in Ambiente page in the instruments, but they aren't required.

Both Inspirata and MIR are IR based. Ambiente appears to be fully algorithmic, as it only requires 28 MB per single plugin format plus 9 MB for shared resources and assets.

Insprata, by comparison, requires a minimum of 210 GB hard drive space for the Pro version.
VSL MIR won't even disclose how much space is needed.

Yes it must be algorithmic. I was comparing only their functionality not their technology. VSL MIR needs much less space than Inspirata. Maybe it is partly algorithmic too.

VSL MIR has tonnes of expansion packs, so I think that's why they don't disclose the required space. It's just too dependent upon what packs you install. So the base version of MIR may take a lot less space than Inspirata Pro, but probably not a lot less than the Lite version, and I suspect a full compliment of MIR packs will rival the size of the full Inspirata Pro.

I've heard demos of full productions through different venues in MIR and Inspirata, and they are pretty convincing and immersive. I've yet to hear a demo of a full production through Ambiente. It would be interesting if it is as convincing, but with such a smaller footprint and price tag. It could be a real game changer.

I have both with two IR packs each. The Inspirata folder on my hard drive is 232.63 GB and the VSL MIR is 27.1 GB. Even if the Inspirata has more spaces there has to be some difference in their technology.

Yeah, sounds like it. Perhaps Inspirata uses a brute-force approach with small distances between IRs, and MIR uses a good bit of interpolation instead?

There is one more plugin similar to Ambiente: parallax-audio Virstual Sound Stage 2.
I was using that for years, but it is abandonware stuck in VST2 with no Apple Silicon, and Gabriel has dropped off the grid completely.

I use SWAM instruments, and that was my main (but not only) use of VSS2. So I was super-stoked when Audio Modeling introduced Ambiente inside Swam String Sections earlier this year, and then expanded it to the SWAM Solo instruments. I was able to finally remove Virtual Sound Stage 2. I did some comparisons between the built-in Ambiente and VSS2, and I was struck by how much better Ambiente sounds. I hadn't realised just how bad the stereo phase issues in VSS2 really are.
Stereo field position is also much more tangible in Ambiente.

So I'm looking forward to getting Ambiente so I can put the rest of the tracks of a full production through it, like I was doing with VSS2.

I highly recommend SWAM String Sections. I previously had used the Solo Strings to build large string ensembles, and the first thing I did when SWAM 3.8 came out (which added Ambiente and anti-phasing to the Solo instruments) was to recreate some pieces with them, and do a direct A/B of ensembles made of Solo Strings vs String Sections with anti-phasing and Ambiente on all of the above.

The result was that Solo Strings and String Ensembles sounded pretty close as far as timbre and realism goes, but String Sections had a sonic richness and fullness on top of it that left the collective of Solo Strings in the dust. And the glassiness to the top end that builds up over many instances of Solo Strings is not present in String Section ensembles.

Also CPU usage was much better. And of course it took only a handful of instances to create a full ensemble, instead of several dozen.

What I've found works absolutely best, btw, is to use the String Sections with one or two solo strings added to each section. This gives you a "first chair" and will also even out an odd count for divisi. For example, you might want 14 First Violins, but there is a maximum of 6 violins per instance, and a minimum of 4. So instead of creating 3 groups of 5 + 5 + 4 (or 6 + 4 + 4), either of which is not conducive to divisi, you instead create 4 instances: 2 x 6 + 2 solo violins for 2 groups of 7 that each have a lead soloist, which works very nicely for divisi.

The first chair solo violin also adds an extra layer of agility and dynamics to the performance, while totally blending into the section.
