STEPIC - is there any other Sequencers which might give you something more? Riffer?

hi guys, wow i got back to STEPIC and i updated also to v1.5 and i wanted to get Riffer cause of a nice tutorial video and saw hmmm what can it do what STEPIC cant? i dont see anything new. so i wonder with STEPIC what else is missing in there?
i also got Harmony Bloom recently which i will dive in this weekend.

but yeah, with all the sequencers i wonder if you use any other sequencers besides STEPIC and why if yes?

Orca - https://100r.co/site/orca.html. Not a plugin, but free and absolutely mind-blowing - a world unto itself. With just a few commands you can very easily get something interesting going.

STEPIC is my favourite step sequencer overall. Some sequencers offer other features or entirely different approaches but I don't think they replace STEPIC. they are just different tools. An exemple would be SEQUND by ALEXKID. It has like two sequences playing at the same time and than you assign probabilty for each step does it play sequence A or Sequence B : . You also have non linear sequencers that generate sequences based on rules and algorithms. I personnally like this max for live device called Flow : https://orthogonal.one/products/flow/ . I can't possibly cover all the different kinds of sequencer but my point is that Stepic is probably amongst the best for tradional step sequencing but be aware that there is a lot more out there.

My favorite is HY-SeqCollection2. I think it has most of Stepic functions and offers several other functions, that Stepic doesn't have. But Stepic is probably easier to use.

I use the following three sequencers all the time: Harmony Bloom, Seqund, and HY-RPE2. Harmony Bloom is less of a sequencer and more note generator like Riffer. Except it's more hand-on and way more fun to use than Riffer. The Harmony Bloom interface is a 10/10. I think it's the best pattern generator for ambient sound scapes. It's also multi-output, so you can set any one of its eight channels/trigger bars to a separate MIDI out.

Seqund is... okay. In my opinion it's too lightweight. I think it's hilarious that Plugin Boutique sells a "Seqund Lite" version. The regular version isn't necessarily feature complete. Actually, Pigments' built-in sequencer is more powerful than Seqund. The entire gimmick with Seqund is that it runs two sequences simultaneously, and you set a probability switch for each step to tell Sequined which one of the two will be triggered. But, you can basically do the same thing in Pigments by setting a pitch mod option on a per step basis. It's fun, but Stepic looks way more powerful.

HY-REP2 is the best and most powerful Euclidean sequencer that I know of. It's extremely fun. It's also multi-output, so just like in Harmony Bloom, you can set any one of its eight channels/lanes to a separate MIDI out.

I have other sequencers, but those are pretty much the only ones I keep coming back to. I wish I had gotten Stepic instead of Seqund. Stepic and HY-SEQ32 look pretty similar, although I couldn't tell you the major or minor differences between them.

I demoed a few things and chose Seqund, mostly because it *is* lightweight and simple -- I just wanted a monophonic sequencer with parameter lanes that can be different lengths, and that's exactly what it does.

(I also have Harmony Bloom, but that's really a different beast.)

+1 for HY-Plugins. RPE2 is a ton of fun, whether as a euclidean thing or as a slightly more traditional step sequencer. Tuplets, odd-time, polymeter, generative rhythms, it's all pretty easy (and fairly flexible) in RPE2.

HY-SeqCollection2 is a bit more esoteric, with a handful of emulations of modular hardware sequencers. I don't use it as much, but it came in a bundle and it's fun to reach for every now and then for a different take on sequencing (that generally involves more physical MIDI knobs/buttons and live tweaks due to the nature of some of the emulations).

The modulation potential of their plugins is generally pretty great, and the MIDI side is very flexible as well, both for mapping controls and for manipulating the MIDI data with the plugins' internal MIDI fx rack. However, this means there's a bit of a learning curve with regards to their workflow and UI; some stuff isn't exactly intuitive.

Incidentally, the HY-Plugins dev did the coding for Seqund as well, but I haven't tried it yet. Looks a bit more approachable though?

Seqund is simple and easy to jump in to, yeah. It also has some cool characteristics in the way it leans in to randomization. The UI looks great.

I still went with Stepic instead.

Hmm, I have all of them 'except' STEPIC. Personally, I don't think you can have too many of these.
Though I really only use them to run in the background, while I compose some other instrument
part in the only way I can do that, by playing it live...
