Talk me out of switching to Mac

The most important decision I ever made was to always stay at least one macOS iteration behind, maybe even two. So when you finally decide to update your Mac you will go in to a fully patched OS that is running optimally.

That hasn't been required with the last macOS releases.

I switched to Mac 3 years ago and will probably switch back to PC for my next buy if snapdragon CPUs are getting better.

It’s not just the CPU, remember, it’s the native software you’ll need too. Though Microsoft have been making efforts lately (likely paying) to make sure Cubase and Reaper get Windows on ARM ports, and they’re also adding ASIO to the default Windows on ARM drivers, which means all standards compliant audio hardware will have ASIO support, making things more like "the Mac experience" for audio users.

Regarding NTFS, I never had an issue with the Paragon Software when I used it, though you might want to check out macFUSE, which supports a few filesystem types.

Minor things: All apps will have their menus at the top of the screen [but that's really not so unergonomic if you would be using Reason maximized anyway -- plus (similar to Windows) there are keyboard shortcuts], and you'd have to get used to the mouse-wheel scrolling in the opposite direction than it does on Windows (unless that can be changed in the system settings).

If you have already checked the performance per dollar, the system you described sounds like a bargain to me.

And, as mentioned above (and unlike Microsoft Windows), Apple will alert you that a new OS update is available, but you can defer that until all the relevant 3rd-party makers have had a chance to deal with that. I gather that's what a lot of working pros do.

plus: you can tell which DAWs were made with which OS in mind. For example: Studio One has the close button for the plugin container on the right corner of the window, which drives me insane sometimes. It was clearly not made with MacOS in mind. Same issue with FL Studio

HOW PAINFUL WILL MACs be? Will new OS be forced on me and then none of my plugins will work? Will ilok (non-dongle) work?

If you have dusty old 32-bit Windows-only SynthEdit plugins, they won't work on your Mac. But any plugin that isn't abandonware pretty much works native on Apple Silicon now.

But, as a Windows user, you may really cherish your frequent but precious "me time" while waiting for Windows to reboot, or find your hard drives, or launch your applications. It's a nice little break to grab a cuppa. And you will come to miss it with a Mac, because they are always go, go, go...

Not to forget reinstalling drivers, Format C: every couple of months and reinstalling the whole damn thing because Windows cluttered up the registry to a halt... Oh the fun times
