Wow! Thanks for that, will investigate, and thanks to the OP for the question!
Yeah I had no idea either, this is cool.

there's no requirement to nest any plugins, any more than there is with any of the many step sequencer plugins out there.

It's a bit hard to google, but I think it might be a VST2, which is a shame. Maybe they'll do a CLAP version :)

Unfortunately you can't configure nor edit the way mouse targets are, meaning when/where and how a mouse cursor changes from one tool to another. And this part is one of the reasons Reaper's piano roll is much worse than some other DAWs.

So no matter how many custom tools and keybinds you change, or even add scripts, the actual foundation of the pianoroll itself can't be changed.

None of the IL plugins currently have VST3 versions. Word was that they are working on it. But there's nothing wrong with VST.

Thank you, but I was mostly idly wondering rather than having some specific problem or limitation that needed to be addressed.

You'll end up adding five extra steps to save two.
Thank you for the dose of common sense, as well as the rest of your post.

I haven't tried changing the cursor icons, it wouldn't surprise me if that were possible as well. To me it's the best piano roll across all daws that I've tried, I don't need to constantly switch between different midi tools and I can configure it to rarely require a double click or keyboard modifiers and can utilize right drags for selection, which speeds up the workflow. But it requires configuration, the defaults aren't very good IMO.

I haven't looked at the Walter code.. perhaps it is possible to change the way things operate but I doubt it.

In my opinion Reaper has the potential to be one of the best piano rolls in any DAW, due to it's customization but unfortunately it's one of the worst when it comes to working intuitively with dense clusters of notes.

It's possible that DAWs like FL Studio have some kind of rather complex logic behind it's operation but so far I haven't found any DAW that is even remotely close to the piano roll in FL Studio. Simply selecting notes or changing values like length, position etc. is just way better. I almost never run into situations in FL Studio where I accidentally moved the wrong note or couldn't get it changed the way I intended. It's really subtle tiny details but they matter a lot when working with tons of notes close together.

Leaving aside the documentary evidence that BONES said nothing about a "requirement to nest any plugins," sure we might agree that one could use JACK or a similar inter-app patchbay to cobble something together -- but let's not get carried away.

Why? I never install VST3 versions if there is a VST2.4 version available. I only need one version and VST2.4 works perfectly well. I doubt that 10% of the 250 or so plugins I have installed are VST3.

If you're not nesting them, you will instead be having to set up routing for the plugin to receive MIDI from another source and calling up two different plugins to work on the track. Still more effort than it is likely to be worth. I was looking at nesting as the least annoying solution, yet still not worth the complication.

As does MuLab.

I guess that's at least two host/plugin developers who just dont understand the concept of a plugin.
Are you saying that using FLS and Mulab as plugins in let's say Cubase, Reaper or Studio One is counter productive? What is it that makes this host/plugin a bad idea. BTW is drag and drop functional in both directions?

I am again searching for a one and only DAW ( Cubase, Reaper or Studio One) but will like to use FLS for the piano roll and a couple of other features. FLS is missing ARA and other features so not interested for it to be my main DAW.

It will be great to find out if this is workable or not so that I can abandon this concept or continue to pursue it.

leaving aside the documentary evidence that I didnt say that BONES said it was a requirement, just that it isnt a requirement, I dont see the tons of ARP and sequencer plugins out there requiring JACK or inter-app patchbays either.
There's such a thing as MIDI y'know.

Nope. It was a reference to the ignorance within the second post in this thread.
