But, as a Windows user, you may really cherish your frequent but precious "me time" while waiting for Windows to reboot, or find your hard drives, or launch your applications. It's a nice little break to grab a cuppa. And you will come to miss it with a Mac, because they are always go, go, go...

Not to forget reinstalling drivers, Format C: every couple of months and reinstalling the whole damn thing because Windows cluttered up the registry to a halt... Oh the fun times

I was only talking about the frequent little coffee breaks Windows affords you. You're getting more into the dinner and a movie, or well deserved nap territory, which is very nice, too, of course.

HOW PAINFUL WILL MACs be? Will new OS be forced on me and then none of my plugins will work? Will ilok (non-dongle) work?

It depends on how you go about it. The most important decision I ever made was to always stay at least one macOS iteration behind, maybe even two.

I used to do the same but tbh since Big Sur the switch to Sonoma and now Sequoia (this weekend) has been completely painless - everything is working as normal so far. I think the biggest switches were when the underlying CPU architecture changed and the move away from 32 bit support but now those are out of the way upgrading the OS is probably no more stressful than upgrading Windows (and in my experience Windows was a constant nightmare to maintain, I was glad to be past it)

Have not had these things happen and my desktop is way faster in anything than the last mac I had to use...

So I guess these things are like from XP times when some people thought they would get performance back by installing the OS again, to the same slow HDD (which would slow down during its life a lot)...

I have a 9 year old 27" iMac, "top of the line" $$$$ model. About to become a 20 lb paperweight. Too much of a hassle to retrofit hardware to update (even just the SSD), too much of a hassle to install Windows or Linux on it. Going rate on Ebay is $150. Too much of a hassle to ship.

Eventually, in this decade, Apple will render your new computer basically useless. This doesn't happen with PCs, unless a fire is involved.

Buying an all-in-one is asking for redundancy. Yes, Apple like to encourage it when they can get away with it, but a PC all-in-one bought a year ago would also already look like a dud purchase, consuming too much power and generating too much heat by current standards.

9 years is a good lifespan for a computer, but not so good when you have to ditch a nice monitor at the same time.

Many of us run Macs and PCs. Getting ready for a transition to Mac from PC isn't painless but it is very manageable with some organization. Most of the planning has to do with knowing which plugins are available and working on the version of the OS that you are using. I would watch this video...

Err.. Microsoft will stop support for Windows 10 in 2025. For reasons best known, only to Microsoft, Windows 11 has a minimum 8th Gen Intel processor requirement, locking out hundreds of millions of people. Oddly, plenty have ran it fine on much older hardware, after bypassing the requirement checks. If only there were a way to do that on old Macs? That said, because of the processor change, it's likely Mac OS will stop supporting x86/64 processors soon, and there's no way around this. In that case you're left to install Linux, since Microsoft won't let you install their latest version of Windows either
