Is there a rule as to when this happens? I notice in some projects some noise during a silent passage and track it down to a Valhalla delay... I wonder, wouldn't it make more sense if the noise was only generated when there was actually a signal being processed/a delay occurring? I can't imagine a scenario where it would be desirable to have a constant background noise, but of course it's often desirable to add some noise to the actual delay.

Edit, it appears to only be the bucket brigade mode, but not the BBDuck... which I guess makes sense.
All of the analog/vintage "color" modes have some amount of noise, it's just most audible on the BBD mode with age turned up.

Apart from being a part of the model, constant background noise allows you to get to feedback self oscillation with no input, which can make some fun feedback sounds.

Since the emulated noise is a (by-)product of the emulated device itself and not of the program-material that's processed by it I can't see a reason why it would make more sense to only be present while there's a signal going through it. E.g. a tape-delay is basically a tape-machine that has a tape-loop constantly spinning, constantly recording the input, constanly playing back whatever is being recorded, and constantly erasing it right after. When there's no source-signal coming in, the only signal that is still being recorded, played back and erased is the noise that comes from the input-stage - and to that noise is added which is from the tape-iself and whatever amount and kind of noise which is a by-product of theoutput-stage of the device.

Use a noise gate?
<list your stupid gear here>

The noise is needed for self-oscillation, and increases when you turn up feedback.

Hyper hyper!

The older I become, the more I appreciate Valhalla plugins. Thanks for another useful update. It seems like it's time to just buy all your plugins and stop paying attention to most of the others.

Oh YES!
Analog sounds so GREAT! That is the delay sound is was always admiring. So cool!

Thnax a lot Sean! :-D

I think that I need to buy all their plugins... At this moment I have Vintage Verb, Delay, Shimmer and room

Just a few days ago they added a new algorithm to Valhalla Supermassive for free that sounds really decent.
Nice to see that they also updated Delay (which hasn't seen updates for a while)! For sure one of the best plugin purchases I've made. Although I don't use Room that much - not sure why.

Do they send emails us about the updates ?

It's a free plugin, so yes.

And the new algorithm sounds more than decent. ;)

Note: regarding the latest ValhallaDelay mode, Sean posted on Gearspace that he missed a tape splice in the new Chroma Tape mode. So there will likely be a new update in a few days without the splice, but he's also waiting on some Windows signing stuff.

Yeah, I've done that and needed surprisingly high threshold to get rid of VDelay's noise with age even only at moderate levels. TBH I got to the stage I don't use the age parameter at all nowadays. With sparse sections and reasonable compression etc, the noise is quite obtrusive IMO.

I got the new Supermassive but haven't had a chance to use it yet, but hopefully today. Liking the sound of the analogue mode for delay. Not that much of a fan of BBD mode, so this sounds like a half-way house mode that I might like. Interested to hear how the chrome mode sounds (without noisy age obviously :hihi: ). Seems like Christmas is early at Valhalla :tu:
