My last post was about 'what DAWs are people using nowadays' got a lot of excellent replies (even though I fear I might had started a DAW war :? )

But I got to thinking, anybody using Cakewalk/Sonar still? Back in the days when Roland owned it, we did a lot of work with Cakewalk on videos etc, things have changed a lot since then, but I am wondering if there still is a decent user base for the that DAW.

Old users or new users? I still have and use SONAR Platinum.

The new Cakewalk by BandLab is subscription now (if I'm not mistaken) so prepare for battle. :box:

Post

Old or new. Just wondering what the user base is like now days. I personally haven't used it in a while, but have colleagues that do. The people that I used to deal with at Cakewalk back in the day have moved on to other projects so I have lost touch with all things Sonar.

I run Sonar Artist last updated feb 2016 on Windows 11
- use what you have license for

A great daw for everything, even using video which I do a lot.

I ran Cakewalk by Bandlab 2019 for 6 month, but when the authorizing should be renewed then it did not work, it just slammed me with reminders to authorize even though I did that according to instructions.
- so ditched that and not about to go Sonar either unless they do proper challenge response like the license I have now.
- this "call home" is not a favorite of mine

I use Project5 both 1.5 & 2.5.1 which was the last... Best DAW ever...

Project 5! Wow there is a blast from the past. I remember that program from when we did a video tutorial on it - was a fun program to use if I recall correctly.

Yes I started with Sonar 4 Studio. Later on I upgraded to v8.5 Producer, and these days I use the free version of Cakewalk.

I see that Bandlab is bringing back the 'Sonar' branding.

I don't know if this is still the case, but a couple of years ago there was at least one full-time professional at VI-Control who used Cakewalk for his work.

Plus, they (Cakewalk/Sonar) have a forum you could check to get some sense of active users -- or at least forum participants. ;) Seems like mostly English-speakers there, though.

Hmm, now I'm thinking that if the company that owns Bandlab/Cakewalk/Sonar is something like the Sweetwater Music of East Asia, they might have other forums in Chinese or other languages, and maybe there are more users on that side of the globe than this side now (just speculating about a possibility).

One of our instructors in a Sonar user, but he said he isn't as active on the Cakewalk/Sonar forums as he used to be.

I thought I would check outside of their ecosystem. Places like KVR Audio are great because there are users of all sorts of applications (DAWS etc).

What now happens with Bandlabs Cakewalk products and administration of the forum.
I've seen this behaviour before.
A new boss being promoted to a high level in the hierarki. To hide his shortcomings as a leader he decide to show his go-getter ability.
Then you get this situation of him/her ordering things and ignoring helpful tips from subordinates or users. Raise income is a standard move. Ordering admins on the forum to censor some stuff is a clear indication of his/her insecurity.
.
These situations are seldom fixed. It'll probably only get worse and take years before it gets better.
.
I'm using the free Cakewalk and got the subscription of Sonar and Next because it only cost $100 for a year.
Now BF deal - $71 for a year. Ends december 4.

Since many people these days use multiple DAWs for various reasons, I'd be more interested in finding out who is using Sonar as their main DAW.

Me.

It's main for me, good old Sonar Artist.

I have bought Samp ProX8 and dived into a bit, but still too many awkward things to really start projects there. But ready to wait for fixes or ProX9 in future.
- upgrades from ProX2 bought 2015 but buggy as hell

Those are the only ones installed, but have licenses for StudioOne 4.x, Reaper 4.x and Cubase 9.5.
- when Presonus make a reality check on policies and fix certain things I might get StudioOne in future.
