Regarding firmware updates, should I worry about potential plugin and driver incompatibility?

Regarding Windows: afaik it's been relatively easy sailing for the last decades. If it's compiled for 64bit architecture, it will work. Even applications compiled in the previous century basically still mostly work. Plugins with compatibility issues: that's rare but not non-existing. Often when something fails after an upgrade, it's code that does really weird things and depends on certain quirks, like copy protection.

Regarding Windows device drivers: just read the fine print on the manufacturer's website for which version of Windows these were made. Or switch off your brain and let Windows automatically determine the "recommended" driver for that device (which might be better or might be worse than what the manufacturer offers)

Regarding Linux: I honestly don't know. This is sort of DIY territory with too many flavours (aka distribution) of Linux anyway, and half a dozen ways to install applications and their dependencies. So if that sounds a bit like a jungle with surprises lurking around any corner, that seems a fair assesment.
