AFAIK the EVO's didn't have this issue. I've got nearly a dozen of them (since they became available) under heavy/constant use, and not experienced any problems.

Well, crap... I have a ton of those 870 EVO SATA SSD's, and a few EVO 850, 860 SATA also, and the 970 EVO NVME's, as noted above. All, 500GB and 1TB. Only two 2-TB 970 NVME. Nothing larger.

we lost a couple of 2tb 870evos too the firmware issued - rma'd no probs, the other two we applied the updated firmware and have had no issues with ( the rma replacement drives we checked/updated firmware before putting them into use and they're still going strong too)

if you're on win/mac it's fairly easy to keep current on firmware - just install magician and it'll alert you when updates are released, issue was ours were on a linux servers - we now have a spreadsheet tracking what model drives are in which system and what firmware they have applied so that when fixes are released we can chase down affected drives and update them

But at the present time I'm buying sn850x drives.

BTW, Samsung 990 Pro

The WD Blacks are my choices for NVMe drives. Before, with SATA SSD’s, it was Samsung. Fortunately for me (if we could say that), Samsung’s 970 were incompatible with Hackintoshes for a while so I gave WD my money. No regrets!
