The Aerodyne from Andertons arrived but annoyingly had some deadspots and fret buzz. Doesn’t look like they can have done any QC on the guitars that arrived from Japan, just stored them in a cold warehouse then shipped them out. Guy at my local shop has taken it in for a proper set up and will stick 10s on it for £50 so I guess that’s my “CBA to learn how to set up my own guitars” tax.

On the bright side in the hour I had to test it out once a capo was on it sounded lovely and I really like the neck and the flatter fretboard radius. Dead light too, maybe just slightly over half what my JazzMaster weighs.

Were the strings just too low or are the frets actually uneven? If the latter, a simple setup can make it playable but fret leveling would be the better way to fix it.

I finally grabbed a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner on ebay; not so easy to find at a sensible price in UK. It's the ST-200 so full-size to hold a battery and not quite as fast/bright as the new model. Still bright and fast enough, and with battery will be perfect for guitar setup.

I’ve left it with the (different local) guitar store guy to work on so won’t know exactly what the issue is until he gets it done in a few days as he’s working through a queue of similar jobs. I think it may need fret levelling as there was some weirdness, not least that the notes on the buzzy frets buzzed least when held down towards the nut and buzzed most nearest the fret itself. Not seen that before.

If that's happening on more than one fret, the truss rod probably just needs to be loosened a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if the factory sets that model up with lower action than a typical Tele.

It was definitely low action, lower than anything else I have owned.
Probably is a few turns of an Allen key if you know what you are doing. I don’t so it felt safer to let someone else make some easy money if I’m not wrecking the thing.

I bought a Fender Jazzmaster Player II (the Buttercream Pau Ferro model) in the BF sales last weekend. I've wanted one for years. Got a great price at GAK (saved £160 off the UK RRP.) It's a real beauty

A real beauty indeed, but how does it sound without the typical Jazzmaster pickups?

Sounds great to me, but I don't have any experience with "the typical Jazzmaster pickups" What's the difference? The humbuckers have plenty of bass, and a nice "rounded" sound, the single coils (coil tapped) really cut through. They remind me of my Fender Telecaster.

Imagine your Telecaster with slightly more fullness and still plenty of chime. You can get close if you change the coil tap to a PRS-style partial split. Better yet, just leave it because you're happy with it.
