True. I used an old XP laptop until it crashed on day in 2014 and I was never able to get it to load again.eLawnMust wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 12:07 pm Best way is to forget Linux & go on ebay & buy a 20 year-old laptop with XP on it... A couple years ago I bought two from same seller one for $9.99 & the other for $12.99 plus shipping (a U400 & a dv4000) both still going strong the U400 had a 500 GB HDD...
I bought an old Dell with XP from my employer when they were upgrading all of our company computers. I think I paid $25 USD for the tower and a monitor which seemed to be a steal in 2016. It's been collecting dust for years but I have brought it out from the back on the closet as my current computer is no longer compatible with my ancient midi controller and drivers.
I remember what a pain in the ass it was to install Windows XP, all of the software and drivers but I am now committed to it.

Yeah & some brands of machines way worse than others even trying to find them... This is why anytime I get a new-old laptop I find ALL the drivers then burn to disc twice, also I have a '100,000 XP Drivers' DVD boy that has come in handy... You might search 'XP Drivers' on archive.org maybe someone has uploaded...

All I use is XP, On one right now... Have over a dozen XP machines & one windows 10 64bit ASUS Transformer which a neighbor was throwing away, I changed battery & got a power supply note that I would never BUY a windows 10 or 11 machine nothing but spyware...
A couple days ago installed a Fruity 1.7.6 TS-404, only 10 MB total size installed, ticking 'surround' box in wave options sound is quite good then... This surround option not in later versions... Some nice tunes in there too, better than what I hear from alot nowadays... There's one called 'Syneideses' by Andrew Kelly I rendered out to add to my listening library...
Doing tests of many old DAWs using a HiQ SF2 playing two 8-note chords with plenty of phaser & delay found old Reason 3 clear winner in low CPU actually would not register until I went back in NN-XT & ramped up Filters on modwheel THEN it popped up to 1.56% CPU...
Folks they don't make 'em like that anymore, Lke SUVs DAWs nowadays all look the same, Consume mass amounts of resources, They can't run on older systems (except for Reaper which runs on XP still & you can STILL use DX-DXi in it) and most aren't making better music then back in the day they are just piling on more FX which isn't actual music it's soundFX design...

I wasn't able to install modern drivers when I tried a Windows XP install disc from a friend.
I researched the topic and it became overwhelming. I would only be using a modern computer so that's kind of a lame cycle to be in.
Needless to say, the install failed.
I was able to install Windows 7, but that one is totally hackable (as is Windows XP, they say). I need some kind of security assurance.

I'm fine with running newer plugins that sound better than older ones. I have no affinity for 8bit chip sounds. When I want to chase the past I have plenty of guitars available to me.eLawnMust wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 4:04 am

Who in blazing hell was talking 8bit chip sounds?... I don't use 8bit chip sounds... Yeah, there are newer plugs that sound better than older but also older ones that sound better than newer ones... Been great ways to generate decent music for over 20 years but it's STILL not the plug that makes the difference it's the quality of music made with it, essence of the 'MUSE'...
As for XP having security issues that's all bunk, XP is all I use never a problem shit WELL under the radar nowadays... That shit is spread so peeps only use newer systems which are complete & utter spyware... Windows 8-10-11 are complete malware systems... Windows 7 is just... 'OK' it's like XP in a sense but uses way more resources... Vista was complete junk...

I installed Waveform 12 on my current Mac Mini, and was chuffed to see it resurrect the mda plugins. Probably my favourite of the old free ones I used to use.

Shit they still include those? Good for them!... Yeah my install of Tracktion 2.1 has them as well... Hey many of them are better than ones with GUIs plus they are not synthedit crapola... I have a collection of about 585 GUI-less plugs & as you would guess 95% are FX... Throw a bunch into a chainer like Xlutop or VSTforx or Acon Digital Chainer or multiFXVST & you got quite a modulation powerhouse going that you can save out & use in any host...

Most are actually pretty light on resources.
Making good/better music has nothing to do with the DAW and everything to do with the artist...most aren't making better music then back in the day
? DAWs (old or new) don't inherently add any FX whatsoever. Again this has nothing to do with the DAW; how heavy or light one goes on effects is up to the artist.they are just piling on more FX which isn't actual music it's soundFX design...
Anyway, I'm not sure how "old" this is considered to be, but Absynth is still one of my fav synths, as is the stuff from Full Bucket (free).
