Interesting, they went with machine learning over component modeling bc they were afraid to break the dude's tape machine.

I remember I said Arturia will release a tape plugin and they did. It was kind of obvious though.

Post

Well I predict this won't be the last one! So take that!

Post

I predict they will release another plugin, of any kind, in the future.

Post

Yay, another plugin to make things sound slightly more muffled!

I like it. the noise sounds lovely and the instability is amazingly different from all other emulations. it doesn't sound like wow and flutter as such, used on a complete mix it gives especially the vocals a 3D quality, a little flanging but in a very subtle way. (I realize that this is due to the differences in the Stereo field [so it can be disabled by switching of ST Offset], not just for the EQ and saturation but also the wow and flutter - very lovely) I also love that they went the auto gain route because that's what I dislike most about IKs Tape Machines. have I mentioned that the noise sounds really lovely. The delay is a nice touch as well (personally I don't use sends very often so a missing wet-mode would be a non-issue for me). I like Tape Colour 1 the most, at least on full mixes.

It's tempting...

The demo sounds good :) Anyone compared it to U-he Satin? I know satin is more subtle, but if stacking 3 satin on each other?
Either way, sounds good.

Yea stacking Satin isn't the same thing and I wouldn't recommend it anyway, but you never know since there's no right and wrong thing in searching for what pleases you when it comes to a sound.

I am shocked at how good Arturia Tape is.

I am also shocked how their website demo is causing injustice to the plugin itself.

I recommend that everyone download and try it yourself.

Wonder if it’s as good as my goto, Taupe?

Interesting, thanks :)

oh and the Emphasis setting in the EQ section is super fun. With this you can decide which parts of the spectrum should be affected by how much (it sounds like it's mostly affecting the saturation).

damn you Arturia..... hehe

honestly though, I'm quite happy with the TEAC A-6100 MKII from IK. But yes, if I wouldn't have like all of the IK machines and the TM700 from ToneEmpire (which is nice but not really on the same level) + Wavesfactories Cassette for a more lofi approach, I'd grab this in a heartbeat, because it's really nice.

Waves already offers it for years

No emulation is the same. This one might be better.

The waves version, as I remember it (I own it but haven't installed nor used it for probably 10 years now) is quite harsh and what I'd describe as a "hard" tone. Things get sort of brutalized in the waves emulation, especially transients sound _completely_ different in this Arturia emulation.

The Arturia J37 is quite "fluffy" and "muddy" by comparison. This is either a good or bad thing, depending on the signal you are sending it.

The best part of the emulation in my opinion is that you get that slightly larger than life sound, even if you keep it really under driven and even if you balance the frequency response to be as linear as possible. Especially if you use the 'instability' feature at 1 or 2% and have it in full stereo mode (aka dual mono). It sounds absolutely lovely on so many different audio sources.

Can't say if it's "better" than any of the other good tape plugins but it's definitely unique. I've been comparing it to Satin, Softube Tape, Taipei (N4 3rd party program) and Reelbus. Can't really get any of these to sound like Arturia's tape plugin.. but I can't really call any of the others worse either. It's just different.
