Why is modern music so awful

I don't really think I was engaging in the pointless anything but trying to convey my idea, up to this point.
I'm happy you framed your definition of the thing as your opinion now, and acknowledged the reductionist nature of that. Why, musically, is there a difference making all classical music (whatever that is) or jazz (whatever that means) not 'folk music'. Rhetorical question, which means putting it out there as food for thought.
the way it felt to me, with my flaws, seemed sehr condesending, then you strawmanned TF out of me for offering a sort of definition of non-conformist in the affirmative. It reads as a real insult of one's intelligence.

If most of the thread got to be about 'old man shouting at clouds'... I'd seen the video of the OP quite some time before the thread appeared - it has a lot more going for it than that - and tuned out quickly because people were commenting on the title instead of the video, just as though we're a lot of trolls in Youtube comments. In fairness, however, the video used a clickbait AF title.
the "who was insulting folk music" is my bad from reading too quickly. I apologize for that.
Black Sabbath would be arguably less insulted than if you called it pop music was your meaning.
Is it not pop music? Sociology is not my metier. I'm not sure of the insult either way.
I guess we can confidently say Edgard Varese is not pop music. Or folk music, since it doesn't show any signs of being based in music of the common man

without galileo individuating himself from the church, wed never have been in a position where we needed to fake a moon landing...

You know that it's a conspiracy theory that the moon landing was faked? I did my own research and they say it was real!vurt wrote: Mon Dec 23, 2024 12:09 pm without galileo individuating himself from the church, wed never have been in a position where we needed to fake a moon landing...

and varese is pretty awesome.
but there's plenty of great modern music too.
just not what is in the charts mostly, which these days is often one hit wonders who went viral. but the charts has never been the place to search for great music.
although some great stuff did make it there on occasion.

also, i (my opinion, not suggesting it's what jan means) individuating yourself, can be as simple as all your death metal fan friends, laughing at you for listening to prince, but you don't care.
doesn't mean every facet of your existence is "other" necessarily.. although it can be of course.

it could be the other way too though

They faked the faking of the moon landing??jamcat wrote: Mon Dec 23, 2024 5:23 pm Of course the moon landing was faked. They had to fake it to perpetuate the myth that the moon is real.

Decades ago, David Quantic did a spoof article in Select about someone who used to be into Beefheart and Stereolab, but had moved on to Take That and Fiveharryupbabble wrote: Mon Dec 23, 2024 3:10 pm it could be the other way too though

I think language in general is better suited in some cases to the novel, or a conversation in person face to face. I don't know if it was ever truly capable of being used in short paragraphs over hours or even days? The amount of unintentional misinterpretation is just too high it seems, plus for whatever reason and I cannot think of why, we humans tend to be much more unforgiving online than we are in real life conversations. I seriously doubt there would be any disagreement between us in the same room of any real merit.jancivil wrote: Sun Dec 22, 2024 10:46 pm If most of the thread got to be about 'old man shouting at clouds'... When it's a thread commenting on a youtube video it's to me mostly just opinion and personal perspective. To me Jazz = complex music, with improvisation. Classical = complex music, composed. Pop/Folk = simple (for the most part) arrangements, maybe even more defined by the time that it was made in.
Personally I see pop/folk music as more about the generation and people of a time, even country music doesn't sound anything like it did in the 20's for instance, which is true for Jazz etc. as well, but it's just drastic with folk/pop/rock/EDM whatever is in style.
Personally I listen to far less classical and jazz recordings than I do modernwhatever music, but that doesn't mean I don't respect the hell out of jazz and classical music. For the most part all the other forms of music fall to the wayside over the years or centuries likely.
It's all personal taste. The singer in a crazy local band I was good friends with in high school stated fatly if you mic'd (no right way to spell that??) up a pin dropping and managed to convince people to listen to it, it's music. Musique Concrète as the end game. I tend to like music on a visceral level which means I end up liking things I can't justify intellectually, and I don't feel any desire to. So that ties back in in a way to your assertion that personal vision and will are always a part of any great collaborative effort. I have to check out of popular consensus when it comes to some of the music I like, and accept that I just like it.
I mean back to the subject, if popular music gets really so paint by numbers and tonally bland that it's not even a matter of taste, then that just opens up the possibility for someone to write some catchy things that are that much more complex, and the greater public will respond positively to that complexity. I mean that's the best outcome of music by numbers.
