So what Gate are you using? And on which sources do you use gates? Do you only use them as noise gates, drumdebleeder, or side chained expanders to duck one track when another one plays??

Post

I recently bought a plugin from Boz Digital called Big Beautiful Door. It's kind of a combination gate/dynamic EQ. I've already used it and feel like it's going to get used quite a bit, since I generally really like the smoothness of having things get filtered as they're being gated.

StandardGate. Has different modes for gating, upwards expanding, and side chain ducking, and it has a ton of control over the detector circuit.

Fabfilter Pro-G is my go-to, but I also use the gates built into a lot of channel strips.

StandardGate.

Tried so many others. A few were good, like ProG and Big Beautiful, but don’t compare to me in terms of effectiveness.

Same here. Pro-G is my go-to. If I happen to have an SSL channel strip plugin on a track, I'll just use that.

If it's post and I don't care about latency, I'll even avoid gates and use a the Acon De-Noise plugin.

I demoed this and came away quite impressed. It's easy to use, has enough things you can tweak, and goes on sale for $10.

The reason I didn't get it was because pretty much all of its main features are available in Triad (and maybe also Byome?), which I already own- after A/Bing them, I felt the sound was identical, you just don't get the visual meter (which is certainly useful, just not enough for me to consider buying a separate plugin for).

edit: as others have pointed out, there are some differences when it comes to the advanced features, so it might be still worth checking out even if you already own Triad.

I use the free one in the Khz bundle. It has a lot of tweaky parameters. Toneboosters has one with even more.

Expurgate for sure !

I use a Slate Trigger/sidechained gate combo. Slate Trigger 2 has a built-in gate, which is cool (it eats a tiny bit of the initial transient, but that's not a problem 90% of the time). But using Trigger to generate ticks at each hit and then using those to trigger gates gives so much more control. The actual gate becomes less important (it has to have a sidechain input, though). Usually, I use the built-in REAPER's ReaGate (quite nice on its own) with a rather long release, together with Big Beautiful Door. The latter is set to allow the top end of the transient and roll off the top end on the decay.
That said, sometimes a short release and a slightly delayed attack on a gate is a way to generate punch for drums to cut through. Again, using triggered ticks to drive the gate is a great way to achieve consistency.

G8 has quite a few more features than BYOME - may or may not be useful ones but I certainly like G8

I used G8 for awhile.
StandardGate is much much better to me (I've since deleted G8).
Just get StandardGate on sale and be done with looking for gates. I think I paid around $20 or $25.

It's currently $50 list, or spend $50 and also get StandardClip included as well. An easy choice. Otherwise they have some sales throughout the year.
