By ear? Lets say you got a bunch of sample files. If these are not named by pitch I import it into my host and set up Pentagon/rgc:audio with an empty patch. (It defaults to a test tone like sound.) Using that test tone sound I inset a note until I'm close. Awave is software that can detect pitch and set the root note but with complex sounds this can be iffy. Your ear can work around this. If pitch is off Awave can offset this by cents or you could use SoundForge to change the pitch. Using SoundForge you can also analyze a file for pitch but complex sound can give you a false reading because it reads the prominent frequency. Since you wish to TUNE samples in an assembled SF Awave can do this with an offset by cents. You will need a sample editor (Awave) to access the wave files and to tune. Process.

okay I was using the awave demo and the autotune actually pulls a lot of the samples by perfect cents but also bad octaves. So most times I have to change the octaves back manually which is a chore. I guess thats the best I can do at the moment...
