Dear KVR Audio Readers,
Despite of the fact that you have not heard back from me (and the MASSIG Group) lately, we have continued our meetings in January 2025. In around mid-February, we decided on our meeting to split the group into two: the Visually-Impaired-oriented and a group focusing on other impairments (such as physical and cognitive ones). The Visually-impaired group had its first meeting on March 6th, 2025, from which a summary follows below (held at 16.03 onwards UK Time, 18.03 onwards Finnish time (EET) and 8.03 onwards American Pacific time (PT):
Meeting Summary
Introduction
The meeting focused on discussing various aspects of inclusive design, music accessibility, and future collaboration opportunities between different organizations. The participants explored the creation of a music accessibility catalog and the potential for collaborative efforts with educational institutions and manufacturers.
Participants
• Athan Billias
• Haim Kairy - Arcana
• Wojtek Pilwinski
• Brian Walton
• Paul Janoski
• Jay Pocknell
• Matt Shuttleworth
Agenda Overview
1. Inclusive design and its overlapping aspects
2. Development of a music accessibility catalog
3. Collaboration with educational institutions and manufacturers
4. Upcoming events and meetings
Detailed Discussion Points
• Inclusive Design: Haim Kairy emphasized the importance of inclusive design, which includes considerations for visual, physical, and cognitive disabilities. The participants agreed that inclusive design should cater to all groups.
• Music Accessibility Catalog: Athan Billias discussed Drake Music's work on a web-based catalog of music accessibility and proposed collaboration to enhance the catalog. The idea of having a self-serve portal for companies to add their instruments was also discussed.
• Collaboration with Educational Institutions: Haim Kairy suggested partnering with music school franchises like School of Rock to promote accessibility in music education. Athan Billias proposed involving Guitar Center in creating a lending library for accessible instruments.
• Upcoming Events: The participants discussed attending the Berkeley College of Music event and the DAW working group meeting in Berlin. Athan Billias mentioned plans to meet with various stakeholders to advance music accessibility initiatives.
Here is the list of Technical Terms:
• LV2: A standard plug-in format used on the Linux platform.

On Thursday, June 26th, 2025, we had Juho Tuomainen (WG Chair and UEF Student), Athan Billias (MIDI Association Exec Board Member), Brian Waldon from Riban Ltd, Emanuele "Lele" Paravicini from Audio Modeling and Haim Khairy (acting Chair of MASSIG) from Arcana Instruments present there. We discussed a lot about alt texts (ie. the alternative texts of an image which the screen readers and other assistive technologies encounter/notice in the website). We also discussed other projects, such as the MIDI Innovation Awards and other collaborations we are doing.
Stay tuned for more information!
Kind regards,
Juho Tuomainen, WG Chair

Hello KVR Audio Forum Topic Readers,
On Thursday, July 3rd, 2025, we had a MAASSIG Meeting with Juho Tuomainen (Chair of MASSIG and a UEF Student), Athan Billias (MIDI Association Executive Board Member), Haim Khairy (Acting Chair of MASSIG from Arcana Instruments), Jay Pocknell, the Music Support Officer from the Media, Culture and Immersive Technologies Team of RNIB, Sam Prouse, a PhD student from University of Portsmouth, UK, Brian Waldon from Riban Ltd and Emanuele "Lele" Parravicini from Audio Modeling present there. We talked about The MIDI Innovation Awards (whose submissions close on July 8th, 2025), Music China and a possible webinar held a bit later. Furthermore, we discussed the importance of accessibility in product submissions. We also talked about alt texts (alternative texts of images/graphics) and how they could be used in an accessible, descriptive way by using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to help in the text creation process. Finally, we also talked about the situation of the collaboration project with schools and how it was moving forward.
First, here would be some Technical Terms:

Finally, we also talked about the situation of the collaboration project with schools and how it was moving forward.
First, here would be some Technical Terms:
- MIDI 2.0: Mentioned as a knowledge base that Cosmo’s developers are interested in accessing.
- Alt Text Generation: Discussed as a tool to enhance website accessibility.
- AI Plugin: Used in WordPress for generating alt text.
- Discussion on submissions and deadlines for the MIDI Innovation Awards
- Encouraging accessibility-focused entries
- Updates on alt text generation using AI
- Potential webinar focusing on accessibility
- Submission Deadline: Athan Billias reminded participants that the submission deadline for the awards is July 8. He encouraged participants to consider submitting projects, especially those focusing on accessibility or that have received major updates.
- Encouraging Accessibility: There was a strong emphasis on encouraging submissions that enhance accessibility, even if they involve existing products with significant updates.
- Judging Process: Jay Pocknell was invited to be a judge for the awards. The judging process will involve reviewing entries and participating in a deliberation call between August 4 and 8.
- AI for Alt Text: Athan discussed the use of an AI plugin for generating alt text across WordPress sites. The plugin applies alt text generation to all images in the media library, but a human review is recommended for critical pages.
- Importance of Colour in Descriptions: The group debated the significance of including colour in image descriptions for the visually impaired, with mixed opinions on its usefulness.
- Webinar Planning: A webinar focusing on music accessibility is tentatively planned for August, potentially aligning with the announcement of MIDI Innovation Award finalists.
- Continued Focus on Accessibility: Participants reaffirmed the importance of keeping accessibility at the forefront of their projects and initiatives.
Kind regards,
Juho Tuomainen, WG Chair
