Hi all!

hope you all had some great holidays!
So here is my submission for this month.

https://soundcloud.com/impedancemusic/n ... c190-vital

If you wonder why the lyrics are weird and of subpar quality, the reason is that the lyrics are weird and of subpar quality. Ok, the longer explanation is that i've never done "real" lyrics before - i don't count that garbage with the pangrams - so i struggled a lot with it. Mostly because through the entire process i was undecided whether i wanted the lyrics to be cringe/funny or serious with a message and so i ended up with a mixture of both which makes an absolute mess and ruins the message. What a success!

Also, i've maybe finally done something that doesn't sound 80s. I mean hopefully, it probably still does XD

Technical Details:
DAW: FL Studio 24
Instances: 69
BPM: Free, 137

As usual: No Presets used, everything done from scratch, except one of the snares which is one of my OSC-142 Presets "Simmons Snare", edited until it is almost unrecognizable, but it was a decent starting point.

"Is This The Real Thing?"

This was a bit of a fun track inspired by "This" by the band OK Go. Put it together a bit last minute after throwing a few ideas to the wayside. So it's a little rough around the edges.

Here's a problem I had, and why I won't be able to submit an entry...

The tempo that I use for the LFO driving my TTWT phrases needs to be in non-whole measures, and there's no way to do that, as far as I can tell, except to convert it to seconds, and if I do that I can't change tempo.

For example, the lyric phrase "arrive tomorrow", the "-rive" part falls on the beat. The phrase is 9 8th notes in length. I figured out how to divide the slope of the LFO and adjust the speed of each segment/syllable to fit my melody, so for example the "-rive" and "-mor-" land on the beat, but I can't divide the thing into 9 segments and set the duration to 9 8th notes, so that the "ar-" part can start in the previous measure.

Am I missing something or will it just not do that?

I have 96 phrases to edit lol.

Sigh. The challenge entry deadline was the only thing making this a priority project, and since I'll miss it I'll probably never complete this.

EDIT

I'm getting the hang of it. I'm creating a table of prase-length-in-8ths to seconds at 160 bpm, and I'm just working in seconds and aligning my words at 160 bpm, which I didn't think I'd be able to do. So as long as 160 bpm turns out to be what I really want, I think I'm good. Going to take too long to finish it, though.

you can skip the lfo and automate the scan in the daw instead for more control (depending on your daw i guess). lots of work though. i underestimated how long it would take to make it sound like i wanted it to, so probably no entry from me either.

Reaper, so I can totally do that. I'm getting it done working in seconds in the LFO, though.

I should have started this before the 22nd. I just forgot to check OSC this month.

Happy New Year, folks

After a year of dreaming about having time to make some music, I finally found the time to do so.
The funny is, I initially cowardly decided to not enter Vital-featured competition because so many people perfected using this synth. Not me though... I've never used it. Can you believe that?

So I was procrastinating the whole of December to eventually decide, to jump into it 5 days before the end of the month. Yeah.. it didn't help me at all ;)
But it's there. I think it's the quickest-composed and produced song I can remember (maybe except for some Amiga mods). I'm quite proud of myself. Though, there are more-than-bits that can be improved.
I'm uploading it in the form I have it right now. It's possible I'll do some touches here and there before the deadline.

Fun fact: Today, I sent the song to Piotr XTD Bendyk and he came up with the idea of adding vocoded bit (done in Vital). I couldn't resist. Thank you, friend.

Otherwise, all presents done by me except:
* Piano: by Linguae (found on the Internet)
* Moog Pluck, Jupiter Bass, Ceramic: from Vital free presets
