why not -13.9?

People who don't master their tracks loud are just incapable of doing so, they have probably tried and failed before, so now they stick to the "safe teddybear space" of -14 LUFS

Post

Getting really ultra-loud tracks that still have some clarity isn't just about mixing, it comes from the arrangement itself; writing parts with no dynamic range, minimising frequency overlap, avoiding parts that play at the same time. (Consider the standard psytrance kick-bass-bass-bass-kick-bass-bass-bass pattern....)

At some point it isn't just a skill issue and becomes an arbitrary (and generally negative) constraint on the art.

However "capable" the mastering, if your music is built around natural-sounding instruments and dynamic performances it will never be as loud as a maximised square wave.

I have added one free plugin to my master chain. I don't know what it does, how it does it, it just sounds better. Can anyone remember the name?
It's 2024 btw!

Just added a Vertigo Sound VSC-3 hardware compressor to the chain. Kicks ass.

Kazrog True Iron
IK Tape Machine 24
Kazrog True 252
Kazrog True Dynamics
Wavesfactory Equalizer
Toneboosters Morphit (using the internal limiter which is pretty cool)

Cool... good stuff in the chain

..but , how come you use the limiter inside Morphit ?

I use Morphit during mixing a lot so I can use my headphones which are quite cheap but still good (Superlux HD681 EVO). So I mix into the limiter inside of Morphit anyway. And since I really like the way it is limiting I simply leave it enabled instead of choosing a different one (while turning down the frequency correction obviously). I thought about getting the Toneboosters Limiter which is AWESOME but a) I already have enough Limiters and I love the simplicity of the Morphit Limiter (which is one of the algos from the big brother as far as I know).

Sometimes I use the free KClipZero or the IK Stealth Limiter at the end to catch any eventual overshoots.

I could easily use other processors (for example the IK Comps and EQs - I love IK's Bus Comp for example, the Fairchild and the DynaMu are also nice) and I sometimes do. The Kazrog ones are favorites because of ease of use as well as sound (not sure if they're better or worse than what IK are offering, but especially the EQ is way better from a workflow perspective).

Since there seems to be no manual for "Feenstaub" it would be interesting if you could explain your workflow with this plugin.
