RISC-V will wipe it, sooner or later, depending on what jerk moves are being pulled with ARM licensing.
There's no question that open source computing has definite benefits. These days, it is comforting to have everything open so that no company or country can sneak anything in that isn't wanted. It remains to be seen, however, whether RISC-V will get big enough of a market share.

I'd say there's a decent chance the next-gen XBox will be ARM based, as it makes too much sense giving Microsoft a way to get games running natively, and giving desktop WOA the consumer boost it'll need. (Older games will run on a translation layer)

This new System 76 machine (Which is intended for Linux, but will run Windows on ARM) is interesting

Personally I expect RISC-V to wipe out ARM long-term.

There is no reason to bet a company's future on something licensed when an open source alternative is available. Just look at the Qualcom fight recently. Nobody wants that.

I don't disagree with you. I just think it's too soon to make that determination. I wouldn't complain if that happened though. :)

I think the only way to prevent this is for ARM dropping the licensing requirement.

Open source is not about seeing the source code. It is about control over changes and avoiding lock-in. That's why all the datacenters run it.

Risc-V for the moment is pretty pathetic (at least for DAW users) but it being Chinas only option if they want to compete, i see them investing a ton of money into it. It'll be interesting to see in say 10 years or so where we're at. Now i have some concerns for Chinas economy going forward so it might not happen but a Risc-V revolution similar to Chinese electric cars are certainly possible.

But that's their whole business model,no? How are they going to make any money?

Support, e.g. customizing designs, helping with chip design.

It's not that they will have a choice.

According to "some dude on youtube" the new AMD Ryzen Ai Max performance is on par with Apples M4 at the same power draw. The interesting thing about that is that you could argue the comparison between the Epyc and the Altera chip is in AMDs favor because of a superior process node (AMD has access to superior tech from TSMC) but in the M4 vs Ai Max Aplle has the trumpcard. They're first in line to TSMCs best stuff, then AMD and Nvidia. Ampere is pretty low on the totempole.

So i would'nt discount x86 just yet.

Desktop/workstation CPUs are still much better than laptop CPUs, though they take more power.

ARM will no doubt still improve but these will face limits as to how many cores are actually helpful when running music software.

If I were to upgrade my main music PC I'd probably take Intel still in this current generation.

Now Broadcom and TSMC are going to divide up Intel and cannibalize what's left.

Those system 76 machines look pretty cool, I'd consider the aluminum laptop if it came with something
other than linux and AMD... *shrug

Linux is awesome! And it's constantly getting better. Why not just take the time to learn how to use it? You may find that it suits you. :)

At what point do we pull our heads out? What are you yammering about? Do we have one iota of control of the situation? I don't. You certainly don't have any control over it. All we can do is watch what happens. There's no heads to be pulled out.

I started using Linux 35 yrs ago prob. These days it’s just a novelty for me, since it’s unsupported
by most commercial devs.

*I may put SteamOS on something, if they actually go ahead with releasing it.
