Mixing while using combinations

When I make a combination, I spend lots of time getting the volumes just right between the different layered voices. Then, when I go to the midi fader while mixing down in my host(Sonar 4 PE), the midi volume changes the volumes of each voice in that channel to the same value in SS2. This changes the relationship of the voices in my combination, which changes the charicter of the combination completely.

Example,,, lets say I use one slot to for a piano voice, and another for stings. I set them both to the same midi channel. I want the piano to be louder than the strings, so I set the piano volume to 100 and the strings to 75. Now, grab the midi volume in the host, and slide the fader. Both volumes will change to the volume of the fader. Net result,,, the relationship of the sounds change, the strings get louder in relation to the piano.

Ok, easy to solve, use the audio volume fader on the host. This works fine, unless you have a second voice on another channel. Let's say in our example, we have the piano/stings voice on one channel, and a bass sound on another channel. Changing the audio fader on the host now raises or lowers the volume of the piano/stings voice AND the bass simulaniously.

So far, the only workaround I have found for this, is to use one instance for each voice I want to use, and mix with the audio faders. Am I missing something here? Is there another way to set the volume relationship between multiple blended sounds?

You need to use different outputs for the piano/strings and the bass. There's a column labelled "Out" that defaults to 1+2 for all of the channels. Just set the bass to 3+4 to have it routed to a different audio track in Sonar. You'll have to use the synth rack in Sonar to load up SS2, and make sure you check the option for All Synth Outputs.
