I just wanted to highlight this gem in case anyone missed it. I got a good chuckle out of it.

It's an interesting perspective for around here, isn't it? But it's kind of how I approach things, too, at least initially. I often start with a bassline, add drums, then find one or two synth parts, or a bit of guitar, to fill out the sound a bit and, finally, make room in the arrangement for vox. Sometimes I might add a few more textural elements to fill out the sound some more but if the song only needs 5 or 6 channels, that's all I'll use. (I stopped separating my drums into individual channels when I started getting into Ujam's drum instruments, probably 6 or 7 years ago now. Even though I have recently gone back to Battery, I still don't bother.)

i updated reaper and just found out that...
now, when i hide a folder that contains the vst plugin,
reaper won't see the folder
no need to physically delete vst plugins anymore

maybe hiding only the dll file works too

me and a couple of friends do a game/challenge where we each have to make one new song every week. anyone who doesn't upload an mp3 by 10PM each Friday has to pay $5 to each person who did upload one. it's a nice way to hold each other accountable; basically it costs me $10/week to not make music. the amount is ultimately trivial, but it still helped us all with the motivation; not a single one of us has had to fork over any cash yet because so far we all manage to get something done every week.

i guess it's not so much about the method, but rather, turning it from a "hobby i can walk away from if i'm not feeling it" into "an assignment that has actual consequences if i don't complete it."

the only rule is that it has to be at least 1 minute long. that's it. it doesn't have to be good, it just has to exist. but the desire to try the best we can arises naturally. it's like a friendly competition.

after i find "the" method that works for me, i probably will do something like that, and more
i keep pretty busy, and am motivated
i keep trying

i have many output from failed methods
i just don't keep them
because they are incredibly shitty

in quality, they are unlike the songs of my music heroes

and they always will, until you realise, they're only human too.

humans that found their method

david bowie, for like a decade his method was the bob dylan method
it was the wrong method because he abandoned it when he found the chameleon method

is "the bewlay brothers" a folk song?
to me that one wasn't incredibly shitty

but i guess that once david bowie was committed to the chameleon method...
he wouldn't repeat the method used to make "the bewlay brothers"

it's like instagram or whatever. people tend to only show their highlight reels, not their ugly realities.

90% of everything is shit. you are only hearing the 10% that made the cut. they can't all be bangers

Post

I dunno, there aren't too many songs that we finish that don't get released. There were a couple in 2020 that missed the cut but mostly everything we write goes on an album.

I don't really think like that. We do what we do and they do what they do. We steal shamelessly from them sometimes but I don't think either of us ever compare ourselves to anyone else. We're happy that there are people out there who are much better than we are. As long as we do out best, we're OK with everything.

my solution:
- i've chosen some brands in the past and only buy plugins from them.(e.g GForce, u-he, etc)
- simplified my "collection" : sold and swapped plugins
for a while, i was trying cubase 12, but have to admit, this is not my kinda daw. Also some plugins i've got rid of:
Arturia plugins, VCV Rack, PhasePlant.

While stll owning, uninstalled all Native Instruments synths and the majority of Native Instruments Kontakt Libraries.

Also even if I'm a GForce fan, I will not buy anything. Nowadays they released two drum machines, but I will not buy them at all, because Microtonic and Atlas are far better drum machines I know.

"90% of everything is crap" is known as Sturgeon's law. My own assessment is that of the '10% that made it' 90% may well be crap as well. (that originated when people were dismissive of science fiction as 'real literature': well, 90% of everything is crap, what do you want.)

I finish something it's probably going to be uploaded to Youtube. In the last year I have removed three things from the "official" playlist and unless someone has retained a link they're not available ("unlisted"). One was finally kind of atrocious after a couple of years lived with it, the others I think were ok but forget about it. I am not that prolific, finished means I tortured myself a long time to get it. Fairly frequently it's time to "remaster", if only because I understand something better.
