basically is it natural or man made? Do animals percieve music as pleasant tones? thoughts.... :?:
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Well, back home in Ireland i used to pass by a field with horses in on my way home from the pub.I always sing whilst walking home pissed and discovered that the horses had a particular liking for "whiskey in the jar"which when sung softly would make them walk over to me.

So i guess this means that horses like Thin Lizzy at least

According to String theorie, a theorie pushed forward by the like of Michael Green, the building block of the universe would be unidimensional vibrating string-like loop. If you define music by organized vibration, then music would be the building block of the universe; fondamental indeed.

Now my head hurt...

I believe every kind of music can be understood through a 216-digit number.

Just watched that strange movie called "Pi" which has caused a major headache :drunk: :|

i think music, a gift from the Creator, was discovered. according to greek lore, pythagoris, legendary mathemtician, discoverd the ratios for the main intervals while visiting a blacksmith shop.

he "discovered" that diminishing something by half creates what we call the "octave" higher. 1/2 = octave. he similarly found elegant ratios for the perfect 4th and the perfect 5th.

pythagoras, and his followers (pythagoreans) built a whole system of metaphysics around the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4... and believed that this showed the order that underlies the universe. i believe he was on to something.

of course, some will disagree with the whole notion of a Creator or intelligent designer. what can u do?

but, i'd say if music was "invented" music from one culture wouldn't work with music from another so well. but, i'd invite you all to check out the work of Nitin Sawhney, for instance who basically throws music from all over the world and shows how sweetly it all fits... beyond skin.

the "differences" that exist in music of different cultures are like the differences between seasonings on your spice rack... but the same mathematics underlies all...

reducing music down to a series of numbers is kind of missing the point IMHO ...

I think you're mistakenly applying western intervals to music in general. Maybe the christian god gave them as a gift, but the hindu god(s), among others, aint dancing to that tune.

I think in music that relies on melody and harmony - including both tonal AND atonal music, the relationships between between the notes already exist because they themselves are part of the same system, so musical works are discovered. In more modern music sound sources are put together to form new structures which are not built on tonal relationships - more timbral and rhythmically organised - hence i see them as invented.

To discover new relationships not made explicit, and yo invent new relationships not yet formed are, in my opinion, both justifiable and valid as compositional aims.

It was discoverered, a long time ago, that the human mind likes some combinations of tones better than other. It is claimed Pythagoras did that discovery. It is discovered, about a year ago, that the human mind very much dislikes specific cords and note or tone progressions.
It is invented how to build music from those 'soothing' and sometimes not so 'soothing' cords and tone pogressions.

Again, you're confusing western music with music.
