Matrix 6 is showing its age

My old Matrix 6 still sounds great, except when it crashes, which it does frequently. It's on 2.13/a firmware, which is the final factory firmware version. I think I upgraded my Matrix 1000 to the Tauntek V2.14 version. Could be time to put the Matrix 6 back on the shelf. I know there are a dozen or more modern synths that sound better than the matrix, and have actual knobs per function/mod matrix/more better oscillators, but I still like the old thing. Is anyone else using an 80's Oberheim having the frequent crashing issues with external MIDI control?

IIRC if Matrix 6 receives a too dense MIDI stream, it cannot handle it (even with Tauntek firmware, although to a lesser extent).

I'm buffering the signal with a MidiSolutions thru box, so any weird stuff coming from the DAW should be filtered out in theory. I'm not sending blasts of CC or mod/pitch wheel changes. Even with the onboard 'sticks' it doesn't do pitch bend or mod very smoothly. But the pitch/mod signals coming from something newer like the Moog Matriarch work very smoothly. I'm missing the full keyboard, but the Matriarch acts as a nice controller once you set the velo and pressure mapping to behave less aggressively.
