I'm still thinking of going dual-boot (linux/xp).
I'd really love to have Linux working (for surfing/typing) and bare xp (xp-lited) for audio (as linux still doesn't cut it). It's unexplainable why I'd like Linux tho.
Has anybody ever thought about it, why Linux?
Is it because it's the only alternative to MS on PCs?

Because you can.
Because it's free.
Because it's bloody hard work (so you look cool having done it, especially if you've got solid MIDI and audio running along with a GUI and everything...)

It's free, as is all the software for it.
It's open-source.
It's stable (well, my XP is stable as well, but thinking of servers etc)
It's modular,
So it's variable.
It's a statement on capitalism.
It has a nice feel, similar to OSX. (KDE)
It's developing fast.
It's sofisticated. (if you're really into computers you'll like it)
I like penguins.
If you say it's unexplainable why you like Linux, you most likely "feel the linux way"
It's open-source.

I do scientific software developement. Unix utilities are unbeatable as a programming environment, and all of science is done on Unix variants.
If I'd run a web or mail server, I'd probably also use Linux (or another Unix).
Other than that I see no reason for needing Linux.

I was exactly the same about 5 or 6 years ago, when it really was a lot of work just to get anything going. I persevered with it for a couple of years but in the end it was just a waste of effort. Why did I persevere? I think the attraction of having an OS that works the way you want it to is very strong. I used WindowMaker as my X-Windows. It looks like nothing else you've ever seen [unless you've seen NextStep]. It is really simple, elegant and very efficient [uses less than 4Mb of RAM]. There were/are some great Linux app's but I could never get a whole day's work done there so eventually I gave up.

If you want to do programming stuff and such I think that Windows makes it really hard on people. It comes with absolutely nothing useful preinstalled. Everything has to be installed by hand and configured. I use my Windows machine for music and surfing, and thats basically it.

Why not? I don't have a multiboot machine here, but I have a simple linux server in a closet. This way I can run an X-windows server on the Windows machine to do unix stuff.

No... there are several others. Mostly Unices though. NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD or why not Solaris.

Linux is geekware. As long as youre prepared to put in a lot of work to get ceratin hardware running, its ok. Ive tried all flavours and rate it pre windows 95.

By the way...
Why does nobody use Linux for Audio? Apart from the fact that VST support is rather bad, there's enough sophisticated software around...Ardour, MuSe, etc.

The biggest issue I found was that support for MIDI hardware is not good enough.
I have a Steinberg Midex 8 and that's a no go AFAIK.
The drivers are completely closed source so I guess this is mostly the manufacturers fault, but still.
My Echo Audio Gina20 seems supported by ALSA drivers though.
Echo actually release source code for their drivers so that could be supported in ALSA. Way to go! /Daniel

@Bones: If you are not willing to learn from scratch, are you sure Linux is the right OS for you?

Why Linux? Because it sucks - and everybody who's anybody knows that it's real fun to defend something because it's not the majority, so that you feel cool.
Just kidding - but please, flame me. Linux sucks because it's a plurality, rather than a consistent singularity - although others would argue that this is a virtue, I utterly disagree - decentralisation of user interface and standards design led to fragmented consistency of user interfaces=no desktop potential. Asides from specific projects where it's efficiency is extremely useful (rendering, high-cpu situations and security-risk scenarios (networking, obviously)), linux will never, ever be a viable desktop solution until they have the 'one UI to hold them all and in the darkness, bind them'. Until then, until programmers put away their egocentric (and usually, habit-based rather than commonsense-based) design protocols, there will never be a place for linux on my computer, or anybodie's computer I set up-
