i am currently learning the song from titanic and i have a couple of questions, why is there a bass clef at the end of measure 3 it can't be for measure 4 because we start using bass and treble on the next part anywhere, and the next question is measures 5 6 and 7 have notes that extent over 2 octaves how can they be reached if i'm holding a chord with my right hand and a semibreve note with my pinkie finger.

While holding a note with your thumb the other fingers go past it. I'm sure a piano teacher can show you the technique in slow motion.

I'm going to muddy the water with my totally inexperience, but isn't that more of a slurred sound with the sustain pedal?

Post

you misunderstand me where in 4 4, in measure 5 the treble clef my right hand holds a chord for 3 beats and in my left hand bass clef i hold a semibreve note of a different voice for 4 beats so that leaves 4 fingers in my left hand to play the rest of the notes in bass clef that's the problem what hand techniques should i know about to reach these notes over 2 octaves

Post

That indicates that the clef will change.

The marking "with pedal" tells you all you need to know, albeit it only does it the once at C#4, so the maker of the chart might've done more. The lowest bass note is sustained by the sustain pedal, there is no apparent expectation you need to keep the note pressed.

that's the first time in my life I've ever seen two simultaneous treble clefs instead of 1 bass clef with 1 treble clef.
doesn't that mean it's written for an orchestra or chamber or something? (and not piano)...?

Would that not suggest that the first section is all above Middle C but then you have one hand above and one below.

well, the left hand part is beyond impossible if the idea is keep the key pressed for that bass. There is no technique to hip you on for that, forget about it.
NORMALLY, ie., a real piano score will have pedal markings and be proactive with where you do it. All I could do from that is suppose maybe keep the sustain pedal pressed throughout. That would result in a muddy wash and not too musical. It's not a competent job in the first place. I recommend to find something legit to play. Somebody slapped that together in a rush to make money because the tune was so popular.

Sostenuto pedal is how you would achieve this but the damper pedal is good enough in this example given that the notes are all chord tones.
