No need to respond--I found a tutorial:
I use two JBL MkII 8" desktop monitors with a Behringer UMC204HD audio interface hooked up to my computer.
Those monitors have volume knobs on the back of them, and I've never known if there is an optimal setting for them. Is there a rule of thumb here?

What was the solution you found?
I have mine set so the volume can go 'just' a bit higher than the max I think I'm going to need.
Mostly I work quite a bit lower than this level, but sometimes want to turn it up to help check things.

Well, the guy in the video just said to start low and work your way up until you like the volume. I thought there might be some optimal setting, but maybe not. There are some tweakable switches on my to EQ when the monitors are pretty close to a wall. I have not attempted that yet, but one can wonder, have my mixes all been off by a mile? I do use headphones, too, of course.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.
