I feel like Spectrasonics Trillian has a good selection

Actually, there's a very convincing Upright Bass in Sampletank.
Just used it this morning.

I have a really fast computer, some good mics, vintage musical instruments, and lots of fancy software. Just need some talent

For standup bass, IK Multimedia MODO BASS 2.
Pizzicato plucking on Audio Modeling SWAM Solo Double Bass does good, too.
For acoustic bass guitar, I would try a woody MODO BASS model with the pickups/amp totally off and the PIEZO all the way up, run through an acoustic guitar IR.

THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Right now I'd say the most cost efficient VST for decent upright bass is UJAM Mellow which retails for $129.
As of this writing, plugin boutique has it on sale for $19.
***EDIT: Yikes, just realized OP started this thread MONTHS ago. Oh well...

Assuming you ever come back to this thread, what is it about that one you need to be better?
Numerous free ones are just fine IMO, esp if "good enough" works and it doesn't have to be the most amazing etc.
