Hello. I tried to do the sound design and mixing of a classic hard rock song.

this my target sound:

What other changes should I make to the guitar, drums, bass, and mix aids to get closer to the target sound?

What stands out to me:
* cymbals & hihat need to be louder
* guitar needs some EQ: scoop off a bit midrange

Get some thwack on them drums!

Transient shaper always good for a snare especially, but also good on the kit overall - automate it between song sections for dynamics.

For overall 'ard rokk type drum stuff for compression swear by a bit of parallel compression, with the ever marvellous (and now free..) TB Ferox for general glue type of stuff.

A huge part of this song (and all like it) is the groove of the playing. Your groove is pretty flat. With a flat groove, it won't matter how you mix it, it will feel flat. Matter of fact the more you push it, the worse it gets, making you think (and people say) you need more Insert Process X, Y, Z.

The original:

Note how much the verse riff 'rolls' in the original. That is groove. That is playing style. No amount of LOUD equals or overcomes that. To be very fair you set yourself a high bar with one of the best records eva! I love George Benson and Mick Karn but I am not sure they would have played it like that as everyone has their touch. You need to find one.

This video talks about that esp in the second part, "Solving MIDI Sound". See how I bring life and power into this very rigid performance and it now eases and will mix easier.
