V/A, FM, Phase Distortion, Additive, Wavetable, whatever... it's how good they sound that matters to me, not how they go about doing it.
Papuzzo wrote: Sat Feb 22, 2025 6:44 pmAfter investing quite a bit of money in U-He and Synapse Audio synths, I realized that 99.99% of what I need can be done with Surge XT.
That's always going to be the case. You could probably do everything you want with just one Synapse synth or just one U-He synth, too. Different instruments will take you to different places and there are always some things that are easier to get from one instrument than from another. In my experience, if you do everything with just one synth, you'll limit yourself somewhat. Choice is a good thing.
You're speaking for yourself, but what makes no sense to you can be perfectly valid for someone else. Limitation is a powerful factor in creativity, and yes, the process can be as important as the result. Just different approaches/ philosophies.

Someone noted this has turned into an old synth thread. I'd be interested to learn how many of you still use 32-bit VSTi or effects or even DAWs (e. g. Reaper can still be installed in 32-bit with each new update). Last year I discovered that far more plugin companies still offer 32-bit installers than expected, although some are deprecating them. I strongly feel it's a world that should be preserved.

i use 32 bit synths, fm7 and chameleon 5000, they still work on my old lap top and i began using them more often for lo-fi ambient recordings, i especially enjoy chameleon 5000 for weird choir like pads because of the drawable formant filter

Out of curiosity - how do you compare FM7 to FM8? Some people would swear FM7 sounded better. Is it true?

Fathom is great synth, I hope dev will still work on it - he is saying he is working, but we haven't seen new release in years.

Logic doesn't change from one person to the next.

No, no and no. Just because someone is stupid enough to do something does not make it valid.

Why? Things get better, why wouldn't you move on?

Logic itself doesnt. But whether or not an argument is logical is dependent on whether the specific premises support it or not. Since premises may change from one person to the next, your assertion here is not logical.

Being able to rationalize bias is not logic. No matter how much one insists. Bones' biggest entertainment value has more to do with those distortions wrap up in it than the justifications employed to protect it.

Logic, like music theory settles in levels of striving and understanding. And with both, the level of realization that at best, there's more than dreamt of in our simple perception of them.

There usually is an apparent "oppositional defiance" at play there.
Best to let it go and not feed it.

Personally I don't use Logic...

I use Bitwig.

Another vote for the Filterscape and UAD Opal.

I'll also add:
  • Beepstreet Zeeon - not super complex but a gorgeous tone, and works on MacOS.
  • Moog Model 15 - really weighty and great with audio rate modulation, and also works on MacOS too.
  • Pulsar P900 - Feels like a solid 5U modular, lovely sound and excellent reverb and delay.
  • Propellerhead Europa - Soooo much scope, and tends to lean away from regular east coast sounds into complex osc territory. Shame the plugin version was discontinued.
  • Unfiltered Audio Lion - not really good for regular synth stuff but a great weird noise box.
  • Fors Tela (any of the Fors stuff, actually) - a nice modal synth that packs a really nice UI to encourage sound design.
  • The various crazy synths of Giorgio Sancristoforo - very obtuse to the point of some literally being in Japanese, but even just playing with the connections and dials is a ton of fun and great to sample.

Long live the Fathom!

I've wanted Europa for the longest time.

My little list...

Phonec 2 - such a characterful synth, crusty and erratic joy
Thorn - has a couple of tricks up its sleeve that few other synths have, which is nice
Generate - another unique synth with curious oscillators and lots of fun modulation
Filterscape VA - the surprise synth hidden in the effect plug-in!
Blue III - perhaps a bit of nostalgia but, one of those early "does a bit of everything" synths
TAL-Pha - still relatively new, a really fun synth to programme, full of surprises
HY-Poly - an obscure but powerful synth with a very well designed architecture
Dagger - filthy analogue modelling, a shame Beepstreet stopped supporting PC/vst versions
