Ok, here we go:
decided to take a trip down memory lane and test my first DAW Magix Music Maker 2005 deluxe.
And in some parts, it's still an amazing beast (especially some of their acid bass and breakbeat plugins). And then I wondered: how is the state of it nowadays?
Truth be told, it's wonky.
First of all the good: it's stable and some of the older modules are amazing (like bit machine).
But overall the new GUI is trash, it's flat has, some strange latency response, and many options are missing.
There are several things missing (at least at first sight):
-input quantization
-the ability to have a metronome 2 bars before recording
-all instruments being installed (you have to install them via their store)
-A MIDI editor that focuses automatically on the clip you opened to edit
There are also numerous other things like phasing issues on reverbs, filters, delays, no ducking functions, and aliasing in filters and compressors (On some the threshold works the opposite on some of them it doesn't...).
Some of their FX don't have an input and output gain for their saturation. In some of them you have to scroll through presets to unlock and access all controls....
And editing is strangely bloated while changing the grid size doesn't work cohesively.
The sounds range from okish to amazing, only downside some are massively too loud.
The pattern module is fun with its pattern library but until now I have found no option to enable swing or other subdivisions that are 16ths.
The last straw that breaks it, is the necessity of having to log in every time you start it up...
Magix - What went wrong and am I the only one noticing it?
PS Right now I use a mix of Logic, Reaper, and Ableton to make various kinds of music

Yup, That's one of a number of sequencer/DAW that gets BETTER as you go back in time...
I was messing with Deluxe 2004, which is handy fun but 4-5 years in the future just absolute junk, beyond that despicable...
Really liked the 303 sound in it (2004 that is) and the Sampler handled my very large homebrew SF2 just fine-

In my opinion, such projects are doomed due to the presence of the top 3-5 best daws, which have everything you need.

True that. I remember a couple of lads I knew mentioning using Cubase to make dance music in 1995.eLawnMust wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 8:54 pm OK, Well... Opinions vary on what is 'best' but fact is that everything you need to make music has BEEN in sequencers & DAWs already for 15-20 years...

I've used the very old version that couldn't load VST.

True, but even 3 years ago when I gifted a bought version from Humble Bundle of Musik Maker to a friend, it was still decent enough and a good starting point. But now it is barely useable with it's changes and it's newer bug and the latency of it's GUI.lotus2035 wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 9:06 pm Magix are the worst for adding very little to each update and charging way too much.
No wonder their stuff goes for peanuts on Humble Bundle.
I mean the Premium version was on sale last month for 30 bucks, but after trying it I wouldn't even buy it for 1...

In 2025, it's really hard to offer something unique, since this niche has been occupied for a long time. A friend kept dragging me and agitating me to StudioOne, but since I started using Ableton Live since version 7, I got used to this logic.Starbright wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 12:24 pmTrue, but even 3 years ago when I gifted a bought version from Humble Bundle of Musik Maker to a friend, it was still decent enough and a good starting point. My intro to Magix was years ago Computer Music included Samplitude with one issue (v9, IIRC, in their then current labeling scheme, and then V10 a year or so later). I enjoyed working with them so when I rebuilt my studio setup I paid for two DAWs: Samplitude Pro X6 and Traction Waveform Pro 13. Of late I've found myself very focused on Waveform so have uninstalled Samplitude. Somehow I just wasn't finding the latest version very inspiring (although the supplied instruments are excellent, IMO). So at this point I'm focused on deepening my understanding of Waveform (including figuring out how to maximize integration of my new Arturia KL Essential mk3 controller).
You can twist perceptions, reality won't budge.

I would buy magix music maker in a heartbeat if I didn't have to load it into c drive. I think there is a big vst company I have the same issue with and I will see it for sale and not be able to grab it..
