Hi there,
I know there are hundreds of how-to-snare-questions to be found here, but after a while I gave up realizing, that most people have a slightly different opinion on what "distorted" and "harsh" means. I'm talking about Hocico, Suicide Commando, etc. and that's what I'm after.
I tried countless hours to reproduce something like that. I used different snares as a starting sample, I added distortion and reverb (and vice versa), I even layered noise on top of it, but I just can't get it to sound right.
How do you do this? What is your approach?

I run things through guitar effects. My favorite is the pedal board in Logic.

You can find some of those long harsh snares in NI Battery library. When you listen carefully to Suicide Commando or Hocico stuf, you'll discover that those snare sounds are not really snare, but made of burst of noise in synth.

try to layer some white noise over the snare sample. you can also eq the hell out of the noise until its to your liking, also add some decent reverb. experiment with different lenghts of the white noise.
there is also another nice effect if you set very long reverb times but cut the volume with a gate or by bouncing it to a .wav and just shorten the sample
if you do this you can also put some distortion after the reverb.

i discovered this topic but sadly the video is not available anymore... i think asking after nearly 10 years wont help but does someone know maybe still? this reads very interesting. but i dunno what you meant "made of burst of nouse in synth" ? maybe if anyone knows?ruczaj wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2016 12:30 pm You can find some of those long harsh snares in NI Battery library. so you've not considered that they meant you can synthesise a snare sound via use of a synth's noise generator?Caine123 wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 10:32 am i dunno what you meant "made of burst of nouse in synth" ? maybe if anyone knows?
if not, you could always try googling, eg 'snare from synth noise burst', there's a slim chance you mind find some info on that internet thingy.

I know this is a stupid question, but have you tried 909 and 808 snares thru bit reduction?

I find that a wide selection of drum machine samples helps, and then whittle them down to a smaller variety.
Then, during use, sometime boost and cut in VERY VERY steep quantities of decibles for extreme drum changes in sound character.
You'd be surprised how much a drum sound can change with just a graphic EQ boost of 24 dB at whatever freq surrounded by steep cuts on both sides.
Really mangling the drums can be fun and makes the sample pool go farther. And if your effects can be automated, you can get even more effects from moving sweeps to the rhythm.
I'm not goth, but i listen to a lot of classic 80s and 90s industrial and a bit of 2000s industrial from Front Line Assembly or whatnot. I can't usually make that kind of music but I wish i could. Sometimes there's a bit of overlap with goth stuff in some of the remixes or whatnot. sorry if I'm just leading you astray. i hope you find the sounds you're looking for.
peace.

You should find the series of articles that describes drum synthesis of each standard drum sound. 808, 909, 606, most analog drum synth snares are made with a synthetic noise generator into a filter and in some cases layered with an oscillator and in other cases using the resonance of the filter to add the "tonal" bit of the snare. So taking any snare sound and adding a filtered blast of white noise over the top of it can add an interesting texture that ranges from an extra pronounced snap to a washed out reverb tail depending on the filtering and the envelope of the noise. You can also just gate the noise and use the original snare to trigger the noise. After combining these layers you can then process everything together with further dynamics EQ distortion etc
