I have no idea what McDSP is doing here but taking a quick look in Plugin Doctor shows that it has very different attack/release times for different frequencies. Low and high frequencies have almost instant timings whereas around 300Hz to 2kHz have much longer attack and release constants. Combine this with clever filtering of the control signal and you can pretty much tailor the harmonic series of the compression.

Mind you, this plugin creates zero harmonic distortion unless it is limiting. All of the "mojo" happens when limiting takes place and it's difficult to know if an actual "transformer" algorithm is being crossfaded in by the control signal from the gain reduction or if it's just the harmonics series from the limiter itself that is the shaped and filtered to become the "transformer emulation".

Whatever is done behind the scenes is rather unique and thus I think it may be difficult to copy the exact sound of this plugin with anything else.

So if you happen to have Arturia's Comp Tube-STA plugin (or any of the other plugin clones available), you can get really close to the sound of the 4040. You may want to add an actual brick wall look-a-head limiter at the end though as the 4040 has one of those built in too.

I just did a quick comparison and with these settings on the Arturia STA you get very similar results:

Triple or Double Mode
Release around 7.50 to 8.00, slightly depending on source
Then for fine tuning you could use the bell band side chain Equalizer between 5 to 10kHz to emphasize the highs a little bit

Audio example:

Drumbus, McDSP 4040 (approx 6dB GR (Google Drive, 2mb 16bit 48kHz .WAV)

Arturia Tube-STA (approx 6dB GR) (Google Drive, 2mb 16bit 48kHz .WAV)

I also put Fuse Audio Ocelot Limiter after the Arturia plugin to keep peaks at exactly -2dBFS just like I had the McDSP 4040 ceiling at -2. The Arturia is slightly more saturate and has a bit more "vibe" but the overall action is very similar.

If you really want the ease of use of the 4040 it can usually be had for very little money a few times a year. Currently I see it for 25 euros at Gear4Music (an European online music store)
I must admit that I like the McDSP better in this example. Too bad they are a horrible company on customer loyalty and updates/upgrades.

Oh, that sounds really good...

PSP Twin-L is very underrated for this. Low CPU too. It's replaced TrackLimit for me on most buses as the coupling between the transient and the body sounds more intact. These modern limiters that compartmentalise averaged and peak portions of the audio can sound a bit weird sometimes, but i am only licking it here and there. Still sounds pretty good though when you dig in on the VCA mode. Opto is a little too rounded for my needs

This was the first that came to my mind, but the OP doesn't want anything iLok.
