Lyrics nobody gets

I'm not talking "scuse me while I kiss this guy" or "hold me closer Tony Danza", but more like "You really played 'Every Breath You Take' at your wedding?"
Or how "Born in the USA" is not a patriotic song.
My favorite example of people not getting this is how everyone in sales thinks "Bright Future in Sales" by Fountains of Wayne is an inspirational song about being in sales, when it's about a guy who can't seem to figure out that he is an alcoholic.

Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

I've known some people who think Sarah MacLachlan's Possession is a love song.

"In The Air Tonight" is not about Phil Collins watching someone else fail to give a hand to someone drowning.

did marijuana smokers listen to beatles music?
if they did, did they know right away that "got to get you into my life" was about weed?
i mean why would they?
that song seemed like another paul macartney song about a girl or a woman:
michelle
yesterday
she`s a woman
the long and winding road

led zeppelin has a song called "hot dog"
i`m guessing that it`s about robert plant`s erection(s)

On a related note I heard "There She Goes" in an ad for birth control. I guess we give Janssen Pharmaceuticals partial credit because the song is about a drug.

For the others, there's genius.com. "Hot Dog" is an expression in the US South equivalent to "holey moley".

I don't think they had Angel Dust back then. I've always heard it was about one of David Bowie's girlfriend who's name was Angie.
The perfect song like this is Louie, Louie.

It honestly creeps me out when I meet (on the internet or wherever) people who are 180degrees off on what I made a song about. It actually makes me physically ill. The reality I can't accept is that perception can so totally alter some people's perception that they are essentially living in their own fantasy and are unable to process reality.

Edit: I guess they did have angel dust back then. Watched the Sly Stone doc last night and he was all about it.
