I guess it helps. It always makes me cringe when they talk about Nepo babies. You can't tell me in any universe Whitney Houston got her foot in the door because she was related to Cissy Houston. A talent like that will always shine, no matter who you are.

That totally got her foot in the door. She probably would have gotten there on her own merits anyway, but it might have taken a little longer. A lot of fantastic talent goes unnoticed in this world, so who knows for sure?

On tge other hand, having a famous father got Rockwell's foot in the door too. Same goes for a lot of people who were already famous in other fields that you don't hear played much because their first track was no better than "a little bit Alexa"

lately, i been reading articles at the ultimate classic rock website...
all about my musical heroes

the one thing i noticed is that they were all fame whores
beatles
david bowie
led zeppelin
bob dylan
etc

i`m glad that they were fame whores because if they weren`t...
my music collection would be empty

i mean how will i hear music that i like if i never know about them?
okay okay i`m a slacker, i don`t hunt for music that i like
a lot of them, i hear from loud music coming out of people`s cars

but how do they end up in people`s cars?
i`m guessing that it`s because the people that made those music...
well, they made tremendous efforts to expose themselves
way more effort than a flasher

That's an interesting point. It would probably be good to advise young people to seek out fame whores when forming bands. Having grown up around several myself, I can say that that advice would have helped a lot, because all except one went on to become quite successful.

Being rich offers better opportunities in many endeavours. When I look at actors' bios on IMDB, they invariably come from middle to upper middleclass backgrounds. Very few have blue collar backgrounds.
And, of course, having the right name opens doors. Nepo-babies do well, if they have any talent at all.

this bit about "fame whores"... i think it's true. interesting observation.
even in my soundclick.com days a long time ago, i got much better stats if i spammed all the main message boards with info about my tracks.
i even made it into the top 20 or so a few times for subgenre electronic.

but i quit doing that because it felt fake for me to be spamming the boards. and after i quit, nobody really knew who i was.
on soundcloud i got better results from creating a huge playlist of hits than from my curating my own material. nobody much cares about my material.
and to be fair, i'm not that good yet anyhow.

but yeah, in college even the attention whores then were the ones who people knew of for bands.
the ones who actually practiced and had good sound were like underground.

We were happily plodding along in the 90s, when we hired a fame whore as lead singer. Overnight we went from doing decent numbers on a mid week night at a bar to filling small clubs on the weekends. It was quite amazing. After a while, she wanted to start doing her music, which was kind of like if they made Grateful Dead songs for Sesame Street. We parted ways, and it was like flipping a switch. We gained zero momentum from a year of doing really well. Our songs didn't change, and the woman who replaced her was a better singer. Our drummer left to join a working country band, and that was basically that. I never played in a pop music band again. Frankly, I never missed it. I liked my weird electronica looping guitar thing a lot more, and I probably never would have developed it had it not been for that event.
