FL Studio as a VSTi in Cubase SX

This thread has been attempted before possibly but i wondered wether i am going crazy.

I love FLStudio for basic backing development but like Cubase's arrangement methods (or at least i am familiar with it). I have been attempting to put the two together. (Running FL as a VSTi).

I have SX2.2 and the demo of FLStudio5. The manual of FL suggests that it is possible to put the FL in to LIVE mode and trigger and record individual patterns by assigning an individual note/midi channel. Great news as this suggests being able to develop the music from Cubase. But the trigger occurs perfectly when using the MIDI keyboard i have but it don't work once recorded! Cubase's notes are only triggering the pattern that is current in FL and from the start of play back (not when it is required at the correct position of the song).

I have found a way round it by using the full song features of FL but this is tiresome and non-intuitive as i like to arrange all the song from Cubase at the end and FL is poor at arranging and tying the two together is a pain in the proverbial arse.

I have followed the FL manual (dam crap if you don't mind my language) and got the LIVE mode up and running.

HELP. I get the feeling this ain't gonna do what it is supposed to do and there is a big problem with FL in Cubase in triggering inividual patterns.

Oh but i love those Funky FL rhythms.

well, cubase sx 2.2 and FL5 is a tad buggy together, i have wrestled with seeral problems over time.

anyway, the workareound for what i think you problem is is this:
pressing record in cubase doesn't really do anything in FL, you have to hit record in FL and press play in cubase. that said, put a black pattern way at the end of the playlist (so it occours after the time you think you will be finished). now select another blank pattern, and place it at the begining of the playlist. with that new blank pattern selected, it should have no problem recording the pattern triggering in live mode

Thanks there for that tip. God knows how you found out
about it. I will give it a whirl. FL is a fantastic drum machine. It has given me some inspiration lately to try mangled layers and samples, reversing, cut up loops. it is quick and easy.

I have been doing experimenting.

To get the Cubase SX going, there needs to be:

1)FL time offset =0
2)FL in Pattern mode
3)FL in Record mode
4)FL in Live mode but not necessarily having the patterns selected for live mode playing.
5)FL contains one blank pattern
6)FL having a midi address set for say 1 in Midi settings for live mode play.

The main problem i have found which makes it's use a little ackward is that 3,4,6 are not remembered by FL when you return to your saved Cubase file so they have to be set maunally in order to hear FL's output.
Another little silly gripe is that FL can't respond immediatley to a cubase immediate play. You to give a short spell of silance other wise the output is delayed.

On the whole i am pleased with FL and will buy the software. It is a keener price than Cubase that's for sure.

Hey ... have you tried using it as a ReWire slave instead of as a VSTi? It solved all kinds of sync issues for me ...

personally, iv found that to be the buggiest of all. and not the funnest to work with (ever save in cubase, but forget to save in FL and close FL by accident?)

Well,

I actually like having separate files for SX and FL. It makes it easier to open up the drums and work on them later without having to boot up the whole project, and it also makes copying drum setups between projects much easier. Also, the little orange "locator" triangle stays in sync with Cubase, whereas I was having problems with it getting off time in the VSTi version.

Your mileage may vary, I suppose ...
