You would make a profile and listen to others songs, randomly picked for you to stream, and you'd listen, rate and review the song. After you did this for about 15 songs or so, you'd get a credit to then post your own song and have it also rated and reviewed by the community.
There were charts and general competitions, a 5 star rating system which you could see everyone's songs and how each of them ranked.
All your songs were listed, ranked, on your profile page. It was basically like any other music hosting site except the community would actively listen to your stuff and your music would get spread around and listened to and critiqued.
I actually found some great artists on it and made a few friends there as well.
At some point they went bankrupt or just shut down. I haven't seen a site since that has had the same setup where you rate music and others rate yours. It was a cool way to get some feedback and also find some good music.
Remember the "song rating" site Garageband.com?

I don't know if it still follows the same format but "broadjam" was a bit similar in the years that followed. Though not really as active. Then, into that void, some site I can't remember the name of popped up for a while that actually paid people to review songs (though not much). It was kind of funny 'cause the reviews were so bad... "has a nice beat. singer really feels what they are saying... I liked the guitar sounds".

So that website was GarageBand. In college, I downloaded a mouse and keyboard movement recorder and would do a few legit reviews. I recorded my mouse and keyboard movements and hit repeat and would let it run for days to get review points and cash. So yeah, “has a nice beat” and “liked the guitar sounds” were pretty much the generic comments that thousands of bands got from me!
