Cubase SX projects suddenly starts to lag

I'm running SX 2.0 on WinXP Pro. I'm working on project with a lot of VST effects. Everything rolls smoothly, though the cpu-meter indicates that a lot of cpu is consumed.
I'm turning off the computer to continue working on the project another day. When I restart the projects it is definitely not running smoothly; there is a lot of lagging, crackles and pops due too high cpu consuming, and thus I have to turn off a lot of the effects to make it run smoothly again.
I don't have this problem every time I restart a project, it can be that a project runs smoothly for a long time, and then all of a sudden this problem shows up, and it doesn't help to restar the project.
(When I run Cubase all antivirus, firewall and net activities are turned off. Also I haven't done any defragging or clean up activities on the computer)

Hmm, do you have system restore or disk indexing turned on? They both totally munch CPU/disk performance when they decide to do their thing.

turned off, but theres stuff installed on that system? just closing the application wont close all the background services of the app. maybe that could be the problem.Andy wrote: ....

No, I have turned both system restore and disk indexing off.
Also, I have set all the firewall and antivirus background services to a manual start. I have checked the task manager to see that no strange processes are running in the background.
Remember that that my problem is occasional!

thats why i assumed i could be a background task.Andy wrote:No, I have turned both system restore and disk indexing off.

strange. did you try to save the project under a different file name? sometimes this helps.
or maybe try to save the project to a different folder using the cubase function (its a bit like a clean up of the project too).

I haven't tried this, but I will do!DwarfNebula wrote: strange. did you try to save the project under a different file name? sometimes this helps.

However, I don't realise why this problems shows up in the first place ...

I think the problem is caused by a particular plugin.
Try to isolate the plugin anyhow. Maybe there is one of them inside the stack, which does wrong things on initialization (i.e. accessing wrong memory areas and causing malfunctions).
It is also possible, that one of the plugins handeles chunks wrong (this is infact a common problem with VST and very dangerous). So this problen may occur especcially on song recall (reload) by confusing other plugins or Cubase itself or cusing strange endless-loops inside one of the modules (which steals permanently performance then).
Hard to fix.
I also discovered, that sometimes Cubase don't switch some knobs right on restarting a song. It seems, that under certain circumstances some editings are lost (i.e. some not used off-switched effects are surprisingly switched *on* on song restart).
Try to check this.

Jackle+hyde may well be right.
I had a similar problem with some freeware Delay based effects.
I don't think some empty their buffers well or often enough(?)

I don't have anything against gravity but it really does weigh me down

Just recently I noticed this on a particular plugin but thought it was bug in the plugin itself. Also I have noticed that some of my older plugins seems to cause cpu overload on project restart. However, I tend not to use these anymore!jackle&hyde wrote: I also discovered, that sometimes Cubase don't switch some knobs right on restarting a song.
