Here's my submission for this month.

For this track I used 11 instances of Thorn. All modulations of the parameters have been done live by making use of aftertouch and/or the modulation wheel. So no automations other than some volume changes here and there. In a studio setting, I think this makes the music nice and organic. Of course, a DJ on stage always does this.

The title “Anemoia” is referring to the phenomenon of feeling nostalgic to a time or place that one has not experienced before...

DAW: Reaper 7.34

Mixing: Plexi Tape, Space Station, Echoes T7E and Grain Space by Audiority. Sonsig Rev-A by Relab. Body & Soul by TSOM, Graphic EQ by Viator and UADx 1176 FET Compressor by Universal Audio.

Mastering: Smart EQ4 and Smart Limit by Sonible.
Very cool! It reminds me of the music in the Stray videogame

Lopyt Music wrote: Mon Mar 17, 2025 6:52 am It is my first time entering this challenge, is there anything I should know? I made sure to read the rules and FAQ
Hi! Well, in general, the rules say everything accurately enough, if you have any specific questions, please ask. :tu:

By the end of the month, make a track using only Thorn for all the sounds. You can create your own patches (respected way) or use factory and free third-party presets (absolutely allowed). Effects and samples included in the synthesizer are allowed without restrictions. External effects are used according to the rules (basic concept: synthesizer sound should always be recognizable if you turn off external effects), we mainly use effects for mixing/mastering and the overall sound picture: reverbs, delays, punners, widers, compressors, limiters, equalizers and in the same spirit...

Upload your track to your SoundCloud account, with a description according to the rules and access to direct download. In this thread, write a message with a link to the track and the same description as in SC. Then there will be a mandatory vote for all tracks, which will last two weeks next month, and a link to it will appear in the header message of this thread on April 1.

And one more non-obvious point: OSC community is actually very friendly and talkative, but most of the communication takes place not on KVR, but in our Discord group, I'll leave a link here, which will be valid for a week: https://discord.gg/9XVgGPP7

I think it's ok. The high end is flirting with harsh IMHO.

Thorn was a great pleasure to use. Sounds were predictable, harmonic filter is powerful, there are a ton of "under the hood" adjustments you can make, and just fun! I tried to use some of these capabilites while also making a more traditional song than I usual do. I did stray into a brief adventure with the glitch sequencer, but that was unavoidable as it's so much fun. Enjoy, and thanks to Richard and BJ as always for keeping this together.

45 instances of Thorn in Logic Pro X
Commercial plugins: Various SSL channel strips (PA and Waves), Bettermaker EQ (secret weapon for M/S processing!), NI Bus Compressor, Limiter6 GE on master bus (was a good learning experience - it's excellent software), Waves F6 dynamic EQ, Logic compressors/eq's, reverb, delay designer. Free plugins: Valhalla vintage reverb, SPAN. Picture - Microsoft AI.

Great, fun piece. The mid-highs felt a little pushy to me at times, the low end was fine. I listened on Adam near field monitors.

Thanks mate, I replaced the track with a more dubby mix.

For me Thorn is great for hard sounds with its seq/glitches etc.

22 instances of Thorn synth
FX Plugins used:
Equal (TR6)
One (TR6)
Stereo Savage
kHs Haas
Opto Comp (TR6)
DAW Renoise

First I've used more 3rd party effects, but I decided to try use internal Thorn effects in most cases. So only few (6) other plugins were used finally (I replaced all reverbs, delays etc. with internal FXs).

Effect at the end (pitchshift-like effect) was made using Thorn automation and internal Thorn effects.

All arps/sequences are self-made created from init. Single presets (no arps/seqs) were used too (factory mostly with modifications and one or two mine).

Uses Thorns:
Thorn CM; Thorn Beat

Used Plugins:

Maximus, TDR NOVA, Lim No6, Lumo, Loudmax, Ozone 11 EQ, SpecTrend, TDR Prism, Microfuse Reverb, Panagement, Widefire, kHs Transient Shaper, Transpire, TAL Dub III, ZL EQ, Beatslammer, Fruity Parametric EQ, OTT, MCompressor

I had a few difficulties in the DAW that couldn't be resolved until the end. The GUI of some plugins froze overnight and I had to improvise a bit. Anyway... I might go back and change a few things if I notice them. But for now I'm happy with the way it is.
