I have no problem with Synth1. Just downloaded it and it works perfectly with Cubase 10.5 Elements and Bitwig 3.1.3

It's Synth1 on Mac that is the problem. It has been long know something is wrong with the latest version. You'll find reports of issues dating back to when it was released in 2014.
And unfortunately, don't expect it to be fixed or updated. When Ichiro was forced to move to a new website after Geocities finally bit the dust, he removed the Mac version from his page:

That explains it and makes perfect sense. The only fix for Mac users is to go back to an older OS version.AJYoung wrote: Sun Apr 12, 2020 2:00 am It's Synth1 on Mac that is the problem. If memory serves me correctly and it may not I think Ichiro had someone else helping with the Mac version. I think that explains the "circumstances".

But you're right Synth 1 has always had some of the tightest code in VSTi land....
I hardly worry about CPU with any synth these days.

One "fix" is to use vPlayer. It is a stand alone application where you can load both AU and VST. You can then route vPlayer to your DAW, via connector applications like Blackhole. Both vPlayer and Blackhole have free versions.
Synth1 is more stable in vPlayer than under Logic and/or Cubase (my DAWs). It is not 100% stable but at least more stable. Cubase crashes 100% of the time trying to load up presets in Synth 1. Logic is slightly better. vPlayer is best.
vPlayer also lets you load up synths that are desktop only and also load synths that does not fit the format of your DAW, like having VSTs in Logic or vice versa. Speaking of the latter. It is also possible to connect Logic and Cubase via Blue Cats Audios "Connector". So you can do your MIDI in Cubase but let it have sound from Alchemy synth in Logic. A good solution for those missing the Alchemy VST, however vPlayer does load Alchemy too.

The macos 64bit version of Synth1 always was broken. Also one of the filters then. As far as I remember, this also never was fixed. Maybe it is time to move on, there are similar or better, even free synths available now.
