I'm finding that even in the plugins that I like, there's like 300 or more presets, and I feel like I only like about 60 of them, but don't know how to find them. Are there any shortcuts to make the work less of a hassle?

Do you guys have any advice on how to prune presets down (quickly) to a reasonable amount?

A lot, if not most, synths have preset browsers with the ability to mark a preset as favorite or to tag it for future reference.

Thanks, TouchTheUniverse. That's a good reminder. I'd forgotten about that until you mentioned it. I hope stuff like that becomes normal business. I vaguely remember some VSTi had an "anti-favorite". "trash" marking function to hide the junk. I badly need that and then it'd be nice if I could just press a button and it would delete all the hidden presets off my hard drive. But I know that's wishful thinking.

VeeSTeeEx is a Windows only wrapper for VST2 plugins, which adds a preset management system to the wrapped plugin.
It's a little bit cumbersome because you have to set it up for every plugin. And it's only for VST2 plugins.

If a plugin doesn't have a favorite system, you can just take the ones you like and make your own bank.

Man, I remember when I had a hardware Casio CZ-5000 and it could only store a few presets and the rest I exported/imported with tape (or WAV file).
I was better at making presets back then and it was easier for my brain. My drum machines only had a few storage slots too and everything was fine because the drum machines had simple to use interfaces and not too many parameters. These days each VST synth is like a tiny little laboratory with a lot of complexity (except for a few of 'em). I don't miss the limited sounds back then, but I do miss some of the simplicity. I had a couple of good rackmount FX unit's and I was doing well. I got suckerpunched by this whole computer era after I bought into it.
