P821 MDN Tape— The Legendary Stephens 821 reborn

For the first time, engineers could hear pure tape physics—no artificial coloration, no excessive electronics. Just the unaltered sound of analog magnetic tape, delivering what was truly captured in the studio.
Now, you can experience that same analog recording sonics with the P821 MDN Tape plugin, the definitive emulation of Marc Daniel Nelson’s personal analog reel-to-reel Stephens 821 tape machine—the very machine used at Producer’s Workshop to craft iconic albums like Rumours, Aja, and The Wall.
Why the Stephens 821 Stands Apart
Unlike traditional tape machines laden with transformers and tubes, the Stephens 821 was radically clean:
✔ Transformerless design = massive soundstage, no aggressive compression.
✔ DC bias saturation = musical glue without smeared distortion.
✔ Direct-coupled circuits = tighter lows, extended highs, and pristine clarity
Engineers loved it for its ability to enhance without altering—keeping mixes open and dynamic, even in dense arrangements.

I tried it out. Pretty decent. But not any better than UADx Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape, which can be had for a lot less during UA’s perpetual sale.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

I am here to help answer any questions as I had extended time with the machine.
Having no transformers or tubes, it does not build up in the low-mid freq. range. So it has a more open sound to it and can define the elements better in the stereo image.

Howdy Ladies and Gents,
New to the forum, I had been a gearsp*ce dot com user for like 12 years but had to delete my account due to privacy reasons last year. Change is good so, here I am!
I'm currently trying P821 and so far I'm liking what I hear. When paired with P455 the combo is almost magic. The sound becomes palpable for a lack of better terms.
Need some more testing but yeah, I might buy this one.
Peace y'all,
A.

It's kind of a fan-forum dedicated to the gear that's been used by the Spice Girls.

I can see how that's a good thing for a deaf person.

[checks notes]I'm pretty sure you can either enhance, or not alter, but not both.

This... this is an April fools day joke, right? Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between gear snobbery and tomfoolery. And it may be the case that the emperor is technically wearing some clothes, they're just tucked into his folds of fat and can't be seen.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Trying to A/B it at equal volumes and not hearing anything amazing, put it into RX10 and it doesn't appear to generate any harmonic content? So it's a, uh, EQ with a noise floor?

Reading the thread on GS takes me back to great times of people hearing difference when using 100$+ ethernet cables.
Some people just want to be taken for a ride.
Persistently and repeatedly.
Incredible.
