I've never owned a JC-120 but have played it's little brother the JC-40 and this plugin is one of, if not the cleanest and lovely sounding amp emulators I've ever played. Yes the distortion is not great, but I don't use it for that.
Perhaps you could answer this lingering question?

Does the plugin's distortion sound like the distortion in this demo?

Trying to figure out if this is the JC-120 plugin's distortion, or if they maybe used a pedal.
Well this is it. Completely dry except from a bit of reverb from the Roland Jazz Chrous plugin itself.

3 different areas of the guitar. third segment is with a little less distortion. It doesn't sound too bad to me. But I would never record like this. It is literally the Roland plugin and nothing else:

Hey thanks for that!

Your recording provides a lot more insight than the one from Roland. I just did a direct comparison to the distortion on my JC-120, and I'd say actually that the modeled distortion isn't terribly off. But the model definitely puts it in the best light possible.

The real amp's distortion sounds similar in quality, but weaker and more buzzy, like Dave Davies' slashed speaker cone on "You Really Got Me".
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Yeah it's definitely usable. Not the best distorted modelled sound I've heard but the clean and chorus tones of this plugin are worth the discounted price alone.

I'll try and do a snippet of various chorus / vibrato and clean sounds later as well. Would be nice if you compared those too.

The thing is the JC's transistor based distortion was one of the thing most guitarists hated about the amp, which is why it was always used as a clean amp. It's much better to put a pedal before it to get the distortion you want than to use the JC's feature.

That said, I felt you can always get a way with using a touch of it on top of a distortion pedal to get a more full sound.
