Using Chat GPT with your software Synths

One of the more interesting uses for Chat GPT is that it is able to design synth patches for a variety of plugins. So far I have tested it with Plogue OPS7 using DX7 Sysex Files it generated, and many Synths in the Arturia V Collection
It seems to be capable of actually generating Sysex, and other patch file formats directly, or give a detailed recipe on what to do and how to do it
In my experiments with it it seems to give pretty good results most of the time and does a significantly better job than the various patch randomization tools I have used in the past. Like most presets created by others, human or other wise you will probably want to tweak the preset
What also makes it unique is that you can describe a patch you are wanting to make and it will make it, versus just a pure randomization. This makes for a great starting point for further exploration
For example since it's rumored that Arturia is coming out with a JP-8000 based plugin and that synth is famous for the super saw, I asked it to design a super saw patch using another Arturia synth from the V Collection, and it gave me a pretty good super saw patch for the Jupiter 8 plugin and did it in a way I never would have thought to use
anyway thought this would make for an interesting discussion. The use of AI in music is a hot button issue for many, when it comes to patch creation however it's not any different than using presets made by a human or using randomization

Good idea, I‘ll check that out!
Regarding AI in synth sound design, I only used Synplant 2 until now.

While I wouldn't do it myself because I have personal objections to using AI for creative work in any capacity, I don't care if other people use it to make patches. Not everyone wants to be a sound designer. Some people just want to make music.

Why not use presets then?cake builder wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 5:44 pm While I wouldn't do it myself because I have personal objections to using AI for creative work in any capacity, I don't care if other people use it to make patches. 99% of the time you're just trying to do standard things properly: harmony and chord voicings, drum patterns, sound design, and other things you could accomplish by looking at a book. I don't see anything wrong with outsourcing this to AI to save time and avoid frustration. I don't think that's the same thing as saying "Hey Siri, create a 90 bpm bossa nova in E harmonic minor."

How is using it to generate patches any different than using presets that come with a synth? Is that paint by numbers also?
How is it any different than using an arp with a random option? Is that paint by numbers? How is it any different than using a Sequencer with probabilities built in? Is that paint by numbers?
What about an LFO with sample and hold?
The reality is all of us use machines every day to make music, and all of us from time to time allow those machines to make choices for us and help make our lives easier.
AI is just another tool to do so

There is no difference between using a preset a person made and using a preset AI made. Some people seem to be philosophically opposed to presets. I think Beethoven was. He had 9 symphonies and 1 opera. Mozart wasn't. He had 41 symphonies and 22 operas. But Beethoven made some pretty sick hoovers. So it's just a matter of what's most important to you.

I asked Chat CPT to design an ambient patch using a synth in the V collection. I wasn't specific it chose the CS80
This is what it said
This is what it said
I am away from my studio at the moment on my phone and don't know how it would sound, but I fail to see how using that would be any different than going into Analog Lab and browsing the pad categoryLet’s design a rich ambient patch using one of the synths in Arturia V Collection. Here's one based on the CS-80 V, which is perfect for lush, evolving textures and famously used by Vangelis and others for atmospheric work.
Ambient Patch for Arturia CS-80 V
__Voice Settings:
SYNTH 1 & SYNTH 2
Waveform: Sine or Triangle (Synth 1), Ramp or Sine (Synth 2)
Filter Mode: LP24 for both
Filter Cutoff: ~60%
Resonance: ~30%
Sub-Oscillator: Enabled, low mix level for weight
---
Envelopes (Both Synths):
VCA EG:
Attack: 4.5s
Decay: 2.0s
Sustain: 85%
Release: 5.0s
VCF EG:
Attack: 5.0s
Decay: 3.5s
Sustain: 40%
Release: 5.0s
EG Depth: ~50%
---
LFO Settings:
LFO 1:
Rate: 0.05 Hz (very slow)
Destination: VCF Cutoff
Amount: 40%
Wave: Triangle
LFO 2:
Rate: 0.02 Hz
Destination: VCO Pitch (slight drift)
Amount: 15%
Wave: Sine
---
Modulation:
Aftertouch: VCF Cutoff & Volume
Velocity: VCA Level and VCF EG depth
Ribbon Control: VCF Cutoff or VCO Pitch for manual swells
---
Effects:
Chorus: Subtle, Rate: 0.3Hz, Depth: 40%
Reverb: Long hall, Mix: 45%, Decay: 12s
Delay: Ping-pong, Time: 1/2, Feedback: 50%, Mix: 30%

These things will soon, not only be part of your favorite synth; but your daily used DAW. There is nothing new under the sun.

I have no objection to using presets and I use them often, but I have encountered quite a few people who call you an uncreative POS if you don't make all your own patches.foosnark wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 5:45 pmWhy not use presets then?cake builder wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 5:44 pm While I wouldn't do it myself because I have personal objections to using AI for creative work in any capacity, I don't care if other people use it to make patches. That's a strong point, we tend to forget about how much electric energy we need, even just to be able to make music in a small studio.vurt wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 6:14 pm im against it for environmental reasons.
