I mean, I patch everything from scratch almost all the time, because it's just part of my process and I love doing it. But I am 100% fine with people using presets if that's what makes sense for them.cake builder wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 6:57 pm I have no objection to using presets and I use them often, but I have encountered quite a few people who call you an uncreative POS if you don't make all your own patches.
I just don't think the kind of people who argue that you have to DIY everything are going to count using ChatGPT as DIY. And personally I'd rather see people using presets, or dice or whatever, than turning to the coal-burning plaigirism machine that doesn't know anything but writes as if it does.

You can be creative in any right place on Earth, and not only in the wealthiest cities. Bring the world feelings from everywhere, and not only feelings of capitalistic or jail environment.

Interesting, personally, I don’t have any opinion on using chat gp to make synth presets, at least
until someone tries to sell them.
Anyway, it’s good for writing letters when you
have pretty much no idea what to write. I’ve
run it for some friends before, if only to save
myself from having to write the letter for them.

You really think people haven't been reselling soundbanks as there own with minimal if any changes?
Sylenth1 is a classic example.

I don't see as that's any different to my (lost now) Moog Cookbook I had in the last decade. It had 'preset recipes'. Best part was the drawings of how the knobs should be set. Very analog.

Well, I dunno I suppose. I don’t buy presets anyway, so no issue here.seafire wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 8:19 pmHow would you know?pekbro wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 8:13 pm Interesting, personally, I don’t have any opinion on using chat gp to make synth presets, at least

I almost always roll my own patches also, I just stumbled upon how Chat GPT can do this and found it interesting.foosnark wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 8:05 pmI mean, I patch everything from scratch almost all the time, because it's just part of my process and I love doing it. Just in the past few days I have been playing with it, I have actually learned some new things by looking at things in a different way than I have in the past. My Mom used to tell me as a kid back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth that "you don't know what you don't know" and that's true
For example, I have been doing FM programming with a DX7 for almost 40 years now. When I get an idea for FM on the DX7 or a plugin that uses it's engine I can almost always sit down and just do it and make it happen. When asking Chat GPT to make a patch based on the same idea it has done so in a different way approaching the same end goal from a different direction. Looking at that especially as you can then ask it why it did things that way has produced several "Ah Ha" moments where a new light bulb fired up in my brain that in turn gave me a new idea based on new ways of looking at something
For example I asked it to make the Lately Bass patch from the TX81Z on the DX7. It used Algorithm 5 to do so using only 3 operators with 2 as modulators of a single carrier. I then asked it to repeat the exercise using a different algorithm and it did so using Algorithm 6 with two stacks of two, finally I asked it to do it using 6 operators and it crapped the bed and it didn't work as it got confused as to what was a modulator and what was a carrier as it wanted to use Algo 32 which is 6 carriers as 3 stacks of two
I then told it of it's error, it apologized and it made one using two stacks of three
In every case it was a good exercise to see how it was doing it

WTF, I was just asking ChatGPT about reducing muddiness and it told me to upload a clip and gave me frequencies to try reducing. I tried again and it didn't really work the second time (it's threshold was at 0) but that was new.

Oh yeah I just found this thread almost forgot it. Can you use ChatGPT easily to get deep ideas on things like patching Modular Sequences similar to classic ambient artists in VCV Rack or another plugin? Or can ChatGPT accept detailed requests for patch ideas in things like Reason 13 Combinators? Maybe a request to modify/add to ideas to further shape the 1st concept?

Why would you have an issue with someone selling the synth presets they used ChatGPT to make? I assume the person would provide per-patch instructions/prompts to guide the process, which seems collaborative, if not creative. So long as ChatGPT didn't scrape existing patch files to use as "inspiration," it wouldn't be running afoul of any copyright laws or even any ethical concerns over what constitutes "fair use."pekbro wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 8:13 pm Interesting, personally, I don’t have any opinion on using chat gp to make synth presets, at least

Would you have an issue if a commercial patch developer used the "smart randomization" features of many synths to generate new patches en masse? It seems the only difference here is the level of sophistication. An AI would simply do a much better job than existing patch generators at coming up with useful sounds.

"Absolutely — ChatGPT is great for both of those use cases. Here’s how you can approach each one and what I can do for you:"
Then it gave a very long and detailed example of both scenarios to long to post here

OK. When I get around to it I'll see what I can get from ChatGPT. I figure the more clever the idea the more ideal result for some stuff and ChatGPT is a great education facility. You can even ask it what to ask I suppose or how to ask. I have been asking all kinds of weird musical scenarios, studio setups, patch ideas etc and it has been able to answer every single one.
I don't know but at this point I can only assume someone on the development team had to be either a musician or figured having it learn about music and modern music production would be helpful for some purpose
