Don't let yourself be distracted by guys that talk a lot. Just ignore. It's subjective. It's not worth letting yourself be turned down by bs. Do your thing. Ignore funny "self affirmations" as "friendly" is ... /irony:on/ I'm apart form OSC only part in openly hostile communities /irony:off/... get rid of distraction like this and produce. Produce for yourself, don't produce to get "good" reviews.67maxx wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 2:49 pm I joined OSC not long ago, and I’ve already felt that this is a rather closed circle. Comments like yours, suggesting that new participants are part of a 'phase' that will blow over, do not exactly make newcomers feel welcome. That’s a real shame, because OSC could be something much more open and inclusive.
Also, let’s be fair: the debate about rules has been going on for years, long before any of the recent newcomers arrived, so blaming new people for that as well feels quite misplaced.
Out of curiosity, I looked back at the comments on the mix, and honestly, they mostly came from long-time OSC participants. So blaming ‘new musicians’ feels not only unfair, but also inaccurate.
I was truly hoping to qualify for a prize this month, especially for Lunaris 2, which I love. I didn’t make it, but seeing how much effort I put into my track, my wife decided to reward me anyway. So I was able to get it on sale yesterday, and that felt like a happy ending.![]()
That said, I’m stepping away from OSC now. The atmosphere I found here hasn’t been as welcoming or inspiring as I had hoped.
Still, I want to sincerely thank @RichardSemper for all the hard work organizing OSC every month, especially while having to endure all the recurring debates and complaints. It’s a huge task, and I truly appreciate the dedication.
OSC is good to provide a monthly rhythm which keeps you producing and engaged in learning new stuff, be it even Mixing. May be you can see it like that: Produce, learn, vote, ignore, repeat.

Oh, no, I made my choice and stuck with Thorn and Tantra.toadhjo wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 1:38 pm I'm not sure if Taron will change his prize to a Dawesome product or not, but regardless of his choice I'll stick with Outer Space.
Novum and Myth are tempting but if I'm being honest with myself I'll probably get more use out of a good Space Echo emulation.
I never had a new Thorn license since it changed distributer. Thus: yay!

....never felt OSC a closed circle since my first entry(it wasn't a great song and it didn't place high). I was soon surrounded by nice and friendly comments. I think the opposite: this is one of the few safe community. No fame, no money, as a goal...just a lot of friendship, suggestions, skills to improve here and in the Discord channel as well

Now there's a COMPLETE misunderstanding!67maxx wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 2:49 pmI joined OSC not long ago, and I’ve already felt that this is a rather closed circle. It was removed and I must've missed what else went on after that? I'd assume, though don't know, that I'm not the only one that ended up not knowing what to do with it and just putting it into the 1 slot.....it would explain the low result for you more than your music, which somehow felt very consistently fine in the years that I know you!
And, yeah, people go all nuts about mixing, which is a phase that may have its perks to some degree, because it could inspire improvements there, but it'll blow over eventually. Hang in there!
I think this is also because quite a few new musicians have joined in recent times and it's part of finding orientation possibly?!
Far worse I found the heated discussion about the rules, because it created likely a lot more anxiety in the whole process of creating tracks, taking away some of the wonderful ease we have experienced in the early years. I sure hope that also blows over more quickly so we can resume just having proper fun without too many worries.

We LOVE newcomers, since everyone of us was one at some point, pffhaha. But whenever enough new people join, certain topics swell up and phases like that appear. This is tricky for some of us old-timers, so to say, because newcomers often feel compelled to contribute and establish themselves by sharing their "expertise", occasionally resulting in really weird discussions and so on. But if all goes well, they'll find themselves at home in the OSC and things become more relaxed again!
And, just to be perfectly clear, I made merely an addendum, guessing that "ALSO" many new members might have fueled the mixing discussions. I don't care to blame anyone and I would very much love to know that us veterans keep the flame alive for this precious institution that is the OSC, really.

...also i think that if more than one person give you same suggestion, maybe they are not assholes, but they're trying to help to solve a problem. Then, you can focus on it or not but noone wants to offend or pull away anyone. It'd be worst receiving great comments and then low votes where you don't know why

For me OSC is a distraction. I participated few times with long breaks between and after Monolit I'll probably made another longer break before I participate again. But not because of comments, place taken or anything like that, but because it takes an awfully long time. I would prefer, if this supposed to be just a fun, to have 3 days to made something and that's all. Not entire month (and then another 2 weeks for voting). That doesn't mean of course that I think OSC should looks like I described - I understand that it's serious contest, but still... I need more quick fun. Nothing wrong with hard work, but not with all that limitations (what I can or can't use etc). Still - OSC is a nice idea and probably would be nice to have some one big zip archive with all OSC songs ever made.

And about "hoping for a prize" and "putting much effort into track" (67maxx) - I woulnd't assume that you're the only one. I think people here (most of them) spends a lot of time and effort to made their songs. I may be one of few who treat it as pure fun (and "the faster, the better"), but as far as I saw - most of participants work on their songs to the last week.
And one more about putting much effort in work - I made my song for next OSC (Monolit). Song is like it is, but do you know how much effort takes to put giraffe into a car?

It's very understandable to be suspicious of that possibility, just considering how humans are. Not to mention this is the internet, where anonymous people are often not nice to each other. Taron really didn't mean it like that. Please consider it's not his first language. I hope you'll stick around.67maxx wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 2:49 pm I joined OSC not long ago, and I’ve already felt that this is a rather closed circle. And of course any group of people isn't perfect. There's probably always going to be someone who isn't easy to deal with. And most of the internet frankly is toxic. But OSC really isn't. Hope to see you around.

@67Maxx , As a very old timer (in both senses), I can attest that there is very little animosity between OSC-ers. Sometimes language barriers do lead to misunderstandings - but generally resolved amicably.
My entry this month will be my 133rd consecutive one! As for winning prizes, well, I have had a few top 5 finishes, many moons ago. I have never, ever made #1. I usually end up about halfway, and to be honest, I had hoped my track last month would do a little better, but, hey, that's musical taste coming into play.
It would be a shame to see you step back as I liked your compositions, and as you say, getting to grips with sound design just takes time, and most of all, help from others. I have always found people here willing to make time to help, both in sound design and mixing - mixing with 75year old ears is difficult, and I need to be told "hey, man, that's shrill", or whatever. Spectrum analysers can help somewhat
Going for an African 12/8 with some 4/4 mixed in as well, jazz based swing. Tricky to pull off, but I need a good crash, so I am reaching out on Discord ...
Hope this reaches your ears, and you understand where I might be coming from. Hope you can stay a little longer, OSC does need new musicians - it's great to see them develop as well - a good case in question is Exponent, who now hits the Top regularly, but was placed much lower in his early days here.
