Suggestion for a winning hardware combination and limited latency

Configure and optimize you computer for Audio.

Hello,

After having seen the latest DAW benchmarks by Scan 3XS with few brand new CPU, I'm wondering : do you think this hardware combination will give me latency delay issues at 64 samples ( I need to record instruments on 4 tracks max, but in "real time" )

So the config would be :

Gigabyte X870E AORUS MASTER
AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D or AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

with an RME Babyface Pro FS

I would connect it to just 1 single monitor ( as I've read that multiple screens can give additional latencies ), but it would be a Samsung G9 G95NC, so I dont know if powering such a resolution would impact the latency.

If by chance someone has the exact same config ( maybe an older CPU ), that would be great ...

So, could I run 40 tracks at 48khz, 64 Asio samples with 5-7 plugins on each track ?

( we're talking about Fabfilter Pro-Q + Pro-C + Saturn 2 + Heavy FX + Monitoring etc )

Thanks for the help

DA

PS : I dont want to buy an Apple computer. :D

It would just give you that extra latency anyways.

All good, make sure to first update the motherboard BIOS.
(Not the same model, but the same process)

And use the latest chipset drivers

You are welcome!
Some more info, I would not install the bloated GIGABYTE Control Center.
If it is for audio only there is not need for a GPU, else if you
need more displays, but if it the case I prefer to use AMD GPU.

And if you play games, depending on the game/resolution/Ray Tracing or not, the
Radeon 9700 XT can be a good option, make sure to check the minimum FPS and RT.

is this so ? veryfied ? maybe vs. some specific very high end systems, but in general ?

below a certain latency size, do we really need to continue to compare numbers ?
i´ve run things roundtrip with less than 3ms latency on my M2mac.

point is, for what you want to achive,....besides the requirement to have a nice PC setup,.....do you HAVE to check each single plugin, one by one, vs. it´s own latency read out. What latency does the DAW, or any other host report ?

an example:
UAD plugins do usually report a latency of around 4ms on my system, mac. 44 or 48 khz.
example: three such plugins in a row, and you have added something like 13ms of latency.
Many polugins do add a latency !

check especially vs. limiters !!

Why are you so focused on running all that in realtime?

With the choice of daw you freeze most of tracks while working on the others.

And you can get by with anything you have running now.

But it takes daws like Cakewalk/Sonar that use a single click to both freeze, place audio and release resources.
- and as easy to unfreeze to continue changing stuff

All other daws have needed some further intervention like disable the resource if an VST instrument or audio track FX etc. They all felt more cumbersome in this area.
- but still doable though
- you don't need super duper performance cpu's, really
- unless you are to edit multicamera editing video stuff in video editors

But could be I am not up to date on all of them, been running Sonar constantly since 2019, updated in 2016 last still running on windows 11.

Learn the freeze procedure in the daw of choice and you are fine!

Unless you have money that burns a hole in your pocket...

I am running RME Digiface USB and ADAT preamps and dual monitors with 64 samples asio buffers, Gigabyte Z690 MB, DDR4 memory, i7-12700F cpu.
- where does this nonsense about extra latency for dual monitors come from?

I ran dual monitors with 64 samples since 2010 on much lesser cpu's until 2023, i7-860 with a sixth of benchmark performance than current.

Upgrade due to video editing needs alone.

Dual monitors is such a blessing you would not exclude for such reasons. Undock mixer on it's own monitor improve workflow magnitudes.

Well if you are incorporating track 'freezing' or 'bouncing' into your workflow this indicates inefficiency on the part of DAW and/or plugins...

I have an old Toshiba P25 that's a 2003 Laptop 2.8 GHZ single-core 2 GB RAM running Reason 3.0 & have never reached a track limit... There was no track freeze nor bounce back then as you didn't need it many were pumping 50-60 tracks... Later as efficiency went 'down' Reason added bouncing...

It is generally unpredictable which mainboards will give you trouble with low-latency audio, especially with USB soundcards. Well, at least it is not as bad as with laptops.

The most important criteria for a mainboard for low-latency audio is a good return policy.

The second one is a free, unable, unshared PCIe slot so that you can plug in a USB controller card if everything else fails.

Well if you need to freeze your audio tracks it's a sign that your machine is not able to cope ... freezing a whole track makes you lose a hell of a time and kills spontaneity.
But it takes daws like Cakewalk/Sonar that use a single click to both freeze, place audio and release resources.

I'm using FL Studio and Cubase, I dont want to learn or buy new DAW's.
The fact that you're still using Cakewalk says a lot about you : the software was totally dropped in 2017, before being bought over by a hedge fund company in 2018.
But could be I am not up to date on all of them, been running Sonar constantly since 2019,
Like I said, if you need to freeze in your workflow, it means your machine is outdated and you're coping with it with your freezing strategy.
Unless you have money that burns a hole in your pocket...
Money is not an issue.
where does this nonsense about extra latency for dual monitors come from?
It comes from your lack of knowledge on the latency issue due to your system running fine. Ah no, sorry, you still freeze tracks : so your system is not scaled properly for a modern snappy reaction.

Do you realize that I have asked for tips for a new PC system that I want to buy, and you come to brag about your 10 years old system which is still fine for you, but needs freezing anyway ?

Please go and hijack another thread :D

My idea is to connect the Samsung G95NC 8K screen to the motherboard ... do you think the onboard GPU will be be able to power such a screen at native resolution and 60 hz ?

Your suggestion to go with AMd instead of NVidia, is it for compatibility issues ? less driver issues ?

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT seems to be a good option.

No, the G9 G95NC is 7680 x 2160 240Hz and needs DisplayPort 2.1

Less driver issues and lower Windows DPC(Deferred Procedure Call) latency.

Exactly my point...you use a daw that is cumbersome to freeze tracks on.

Yeah, freezing/unfreezing take 2s, that will kill nothing, with a smooth daw that is.

As they says "speed kills", you better watch out, you can get hurt ;)
- I guess latency of 3ms will hold you back 3ms, yes, these crappy computers of today

It's called "Think outside the box", that is what I did.
- you hunt this hardware thing and got another view

I never said I freeze tracks, but using Sonar it's done in a flash if I need to.
- I don't even remember when I did, 2006 or something using a single core P4, Sonar 4

There is no latency issue, unless you use multiple graphics cards, to talk about.
- then DPC latency

All graphics cards I had have two ports to extend for dual monitors.
- never ever had to adjust asio buffers doing that, running 64 now
- desktop become 3840 x 1080 in my case
- mixer on the right, tracks on the left

You will be done in a tenth of the time with dual monitors, being in such a hurry, and spontaneous.
- have mixer up and closed all the time
- talk about loosing spontaneous

I could run 32 samples, but I am not in such rush as you are...
