Hi all,

I came across this free DI plugin hyped on their page :

https://mhsecure.com/products/software/PhillyDI_v4.html

Tried it and apart from the Drive and Comp couldn't hear any difference.
Ran it through the Free Plugin Doctor alternative Bertom EQ Analyser
https://www.bertomaudio.com/eq-curve-analyzer.html

The DI box does nothing ... The comp seems to add volume and the Drive is a boring basic Drive.
And a DI with dozens of presets?? what the ..? :o

Am I missing something ? Should I change my speakers or ears? :dog: Or is this a prank plugin from what seems a reputable company?

Not entirely sure the bulk of their plugins aren't an elaborate hoax particularly the top one:
https://www.makebelievestudio.com/good-math
https://www.makebelievestudio.com/kevins-limiter
https://www.makebelievestudio.com/parallel-processors

I guess it's not https://www.maat.digital/fidef/ levels of nonsense though ...

Thanks for the details.
I place this company in the timewasters pranksters category. AVOID THEM :dog:

I mean, the name of the company is "Make Believe Studio".

The Link I posted says they are called Metric Halo.
They might change identity after pissing off enough people .. :dog:
And they pretend their plugins are legit, charging money for it.
What's more surprising is some people seem to say good things about it!
Placebo??

EDIT : they also sell $2300 audio interfaces.. so I thought they'd be legit.. I'm confused.

It's a collaboration with Metric Halo.
MH are pretty legit I think...

MH does not seem that legit for everything they do according to Paul Third:

First there are 1000s of companies out there and in 20y doing this I know a lot but not all.
Forgive my ignorance.
Now do go test if and if you spot ANY difference using the DI let me know.
Not the drive (which is basic and boring).

Cheers :tu:

I don't buy their stuff but I suppose I ment the company is legit. Now whether or not their software does what it says is something else. Along with so many other companies. Paul third is great at calling this shit out. Along with the likes of Dan Worrall.

Maybe their hardware is ok, but after watching Paul's video and looking at lots of comments, I'm convinced their software may be mostly glittery scam.
I mean, a DI with dozens of presets?? A Good math plugin?? Fake buttons on pseudo interfaces??
they're taking the piss

Me has no dog in this race, yet will certainly test this as I really love DI - boxes. To be fair, if its a clean one there shouldnt be happening too much. The main coloring would come from the Transformer, if a passive one. Yet this should also be noticeable in a kind of sound - goodizer way (so to say).

They've adressed it in this video:

I can't tell which makes more sense because all that plugin doctor stuff is beyond my knowledge. However as someone who bought Mixhead (mainly for the 7.5 setting) I wouldn't recommend it.
It's certainly way too subtle to be a gamechanger and even at intro price it was kinda overpriced imo.
There are probably a hundred reasons why your mix sucks and mixhead won't fix any of them. It can "massage" an already good mix to maybe make it 1% better but honestly there are a gazillion plugins that do something similar.

Both of their new plugins look completely overpriced too. I'm not saying they're bad, but come on, 180 bucks for some reverb presets?

And then the DI thing... I think they even said on gearspace that it's just a fun plugin that doesn't do a lot. So personally, I don't think I will ever use this but yeah it's free so no one is hurt I guess.

They do over price stuff, that’s my biggest problem with them. I like a lot of their stuff
and don’t put much stock into some of the
comments here, though I’ve never bought
any of it.

The Philly DI isn't a prank.. but it's a bit bugged. if you peg the drive and compressor then you easily end up in a situation where it doesn't work correctly. Try more modest settings.. compressor in the 7 to 15 range and drive in the -8 to +8 range and you should very easily be able to hear what it is doing. It seems like the plugin is extremely level / program dependent thus your mileage may vary.

If you polarity flip with the original source (and match overall gain) you'll hear a very active delta signal with lots of things happening.
