Virtual JV: free Roland JV-880 emulation

A few observations:
I was able to get the AU plugin running on an M4 Mac Mini in Logic Pro. It took some fiddling so I'm not sure exactly what I did, maybe running the standalone helped, but in any case, it does load and play.
Some of the JV/XP Expansions have performances toward the end of the patch list, and loading them places the JV into its 8-part Performance Mode, and the emulated display reflects this.
Using virtual MIDI on the Mac, I was able to send some basic messages to the standalone version using a demo of the CoffeeShopped Patch Base editor. I don't know that its ability to receive them is comprehensive, but it seems possible. Unfortunately the standalone doesn't appear to have a MIDI Out setting for full-duplex communication.
Enabling and Disabling the reverb and chorus in the "Settings" tab of the Virtual JV triggers a bulk data reception message on the emulated display, so perhaps future editing functions will essentially be acting as a sysex editor that is routed internally?
Even in its rough state, this is a fantastic and comprehensive set of well-programmed, usable patches.

Are you on Sequoia? Running Logic natively, or under Rosetta? What version of Logic?osofaux wrote: Tue May 06, 2025 7:35 pm I was able to get the AU plugin running on an M4 Mac Mini in Logic Pro. Edit: Ok - I downloaded and ran the standalone version. This created a new JV880 folder in a different place to the one the plugin created, and once this was made, going back to Logic and the plugin no longer crashes (but doesn't work, the display is messed up and doesn't respond to clicks).
I then moved the original JV880 data from the original ~/Library/JV880/ folder to the new place, ~/Library/Containers/virtual_jv/Data/Library/JV880/ and it now works in Logic.
Thanks for the prompt to help get it working!

Yes, I was a bit confused by that because I noticed it was in a different location as well, but perhaps that is key to getting the plugin working somehow? I'm on most recent Sequoia, running natively with the most recent Logic Pro trial version. Maybe the messed up display is an nvram thing? (It looks like it creates an nvram file alongside the roms, which I would guess that deleting would clear it.) Glad the info was helpful!beely wrote: Tue May 06, 2025 7:38 pmAre you on Sequoia? I think the hardware does this too, I seem to recall there were sync issues like these as there was no way to lock samples together from different tones.xhunaudio wrote: Tue May 06, 2025 3:25 pm Just a question : the first patch of the "SR-JV80 : Dance" expansion shows a missing sync after a single key is sustained / pressed for a while (about 10 secs). The LFO-driven bassline goes out of sync to the drum loop. Is it the SAME behavior as found in the original hardware? (it should be indeed, since JV880 has no LFO tempo sync).
I've found other weirdness in some patches too, eg some of the pianos have some very weird choking or tail weirdness on some notes...

Do you mean on VirtualJV's settings page or from the external editor? Nothing happens when I turn the reverb on and off in JV PatchEd.osofaux wrote: Tue May 06, 2025 7:35 pm Enabling and Disabling the reverb and chorus in the 'editor' triggers a bulk data reception message on the emulated display, so perhaps future editing functions will essentially be acting as a sysex editor that is routed internally?

maybe his clock was too big for this forum...mi-os wrote: Tue May 06, 2025 10:53 pm Why was gentleclockdivider banned? Probably not for saying he likes the MKS-20. Strange.

yeah, same here. I don't think the dev has finished the reverb and chorus section yet. I just use one of my reverb vst if it needs it. What a great gift this is to our world, wow.Uncle E wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 3:03 amDo you mean on VirtualJV's settings page or from the external editor? Sorry, it is indeed the "Settings" tab of the VirtualJV, I was mixing it up with the "Edit" tab as I was writing. When I toggle the (what I presume to be global) chorus or reverb there, the emulated display says "Now bulk receiving."Uncle E wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 3:03 amDo you mean on VirtualJV's settings page or from the external editor? I haven't tried PatchEd but I was able to generate the same "Now bulk receiving" message on the display by noodling with a few controls in Patch Base. I don't think I toggled the reverb and chorus from Patch Base though so I'll make a point to next time and see if I can get it to respond the same way.

Thanks. I can't get anything else to respond, either.

Installed on Windows, added ROMs. This is working. Can anyone really, without being a d*** or making stupid stuff, explain to me why this does sound better than the Roland Cloud? I understand instruments are different over there, but some sounds and architecture overlap.
For some reason, even after the fact, I can't edit any of the patches; the moment I press keys on my keyboard, it sounds exactly as I expected the Roland rompler to sound, it made me smile, which wasn't the case with some of the JV cloud offerings. Some of the effects or filters never sounded as their hardware versions. Some sounded really close, though.
What is this? Admittedly, I haven't watched the whole video. What is happening here, how is this working, and why wouldn't Roland themselves take the same approach? Instead, they sell each expansion as its own instrument. I am not asking for an explanation on monetization (that much is clear), I am asking why they wouldn't use a similar approach to the engine underneat

the original video has been removed from Youtube because of a Terms and Policy violation (they didn't like the parte where I have shown how to get the firmware). Re-upping a new version without that part...
